Man I don't know if I really want to know this answer or not, but here goes. About the past 4 months I have started to notice a "clunk' when I take off from a light and coming to a stop I hear and feel a clunk..Now at first I discovered that I had sheared the two middle leaf springs in my spring pack just before the u-bolts in the rear. I wrote off the clunk to maybe axle wrapping and the springs hitting due to the two springs missing. Since then I have replaced the leaf springs and also replaced all three u-joints in the driveshaft and greased. Guess what, still clunking....I am going to take the diff cover off and take a peak and see if maybe the ring and pinion may show me something...That would be easy to replace since I have have set numerous gears in vehicles....Now what I am really starting to think is maybe my converter may have something loose in it? God I would hate to have rip into the transmission already....Any thoughts?
tell me more about the sound that you were getting from the carriage bearing...what did it feel/sound like...I wouldn't be too surprised if that may be the problem, it only has 193,000 miles on it....
Sounds an awful lot like a sticking slip joint. What type of lube did you use on the splines?
I suppose it's possible to put too much grease in there...if you get too much grease in the receiving tube then the splined shaft won't be able to slide back and forth too well. Not sure if it will feel like a hard clunk though....
(just taking guesses here...) Hope you find the issue soon.
Well, this weekend with 98+ temps outside, i climbed under my truck and tore the drive shaft out. Took apart the slip joint, cleaned it brakecleen and wiped down. I regreased it and put it back together...Took it for a spin...what do you know ...the noise is gone! Thanks to everyone who replied!
