I have a 2006 ford ranger. a few weeks back the abs light came on then the emerg brake lite then the air bag light. then it started running rough, when i turned off the ac it started running fine . then i turned on the lights --running rough again. it finally killed at a red light. i brought the battery in and tested fine just need charging. put the battery in and every thing was fine . a few hours later it started the same process again. I pulled the alternator and brought it to a rebulid shop and they said it was fine they tested the battery and said IT was bad. I changed the battery and it was fine for a few weeks. yesterday it started acting up again after i turned it of it would not start. this morning it starts right up. I ran it a little while shut it off and it started right up again???????HELLLLLLLP!!!!
Sounds like something related to the alternator. The fine with the battery for a while and then not fine sounds like the battery making up the difference between what the charging system is putting out and what the truck actually needs. Maybe get the alternator tested at another place with it on the truck if possible?
I agree it looks like it's not charging. When I had the same problem on my 97 Explorer a quick look at the charge circuit wiring diagram told me which fuse to check. Sure enough it was blown. Replaced it & problem solved.
Fire it up & connect your volt meter to the battery. If it does'nt read around 14 volts, see if the fuse list in your owners manual shows a "generator/voltage regulator" fuse & check it. You might get lucky.

i doubt it is the fuse.....it could the voltage regulator acting up......is your serp belt and tensioner OK

the above part of your quote is interesting.when you say it would not start you mean it was dead? nothing?.......then the next morning it starts. check the ground wires(straps) that go from the engine to the body. and any connection you can see............thinking out loud........if it was dead and then started the next day that would eliminate the serp belt or tensioner. I wonder if a bad alternater could create a totally dead situation like what you had......
