Here is the deal. I was driving down the highway about three weeks ago... lights started diming and the radio when out. I made it to an AutoZone where they checked the battery and the Alternator. I was told that battery was dead, and that it needed to be replaced. The battery was from '04 so I did not get too concerned.
Fast foward three days, and the SUV runs fine, until I stop to fuel it up, and this when I turn the key, its dead. Get a jump and head back to AutoZone. They test it again, and tell me the alternator is going out. So I buy a new alternator and put it in.
As I am taking the old one back for the core charge, the battery light comes on. It had never come on before but it was on now. They tested it again, and I was told that it was fine the "ERU" needed to sync up and that it should be good in a day or two.
Since that time, the battery light has come on and off serveral times and just yesterday that battery died completely.
I tested the Voltage while running and got 14.2 at the battery, the leads to the alternator, and the inline fuse... I am stumped...
If you purchased a remanufactured alternator then I would say that is the culprit. I had my mechanic replace my alternator yesterday. My light had been coming on. I replaced the old alternator with a 100% NEW Ultima from O'Reilly's. How good this alternator will turn out to be remains to be seen.
Do over...
if you are getting 14.2 with car running then the system is charging as it should. Check for something draining the battery as Alcaeus suggests or loose belt.
Well I tested the Voltage before when the light came on the first time. I have not gotten the same result now. Obviously the alternator is not keeping the battery charged.
Alcaeus... I do not have any draw that I am aware of. There are no accessories or chargers plugged, unless there is something built into the car that I am unaware of.
The Ford dealer did say that the after market alternators did not play well with the Expeditions, and yes it was remanufactured.
