if someone could help me i would greatly appreciate it. I have a 79 f100 ranger 302 c6 auto. for some reason it wont start and i have tried a couple of things to get it started, but to no avail. i have replaced the starter solenoid and the box on the drivers side fender well..i think its called a ignition control module, but i dont know for sure. anyways when i put the starting cables on the battery(the battery is dead) and turn the key it just makes this loud buzzing noise and it comes from the passenger side of the engine bay or somewhere in that general area. what is it? what do i need to replace to get the truck running again? any suggestions would be appreciated..trying to get this truck up and running for my grandpa because his health is failing and its his old truck and it means alot to him. thanks and God bless-austin
From your post, it's impossible to say... More information is needed. Does it turn over? If not, does it click at least? If so, is there spark?
You said there's a buzzing when you turn the key... Is it only when you turn it to start? I've never heard of a buzzing, could it be clicking?
If it's not turning over, the best test I've found is to take a plastic handled screw driver, and touch it to the positive side and starter side of the solenoid... If the starter turns over, where it doesn't with the key, you've got a bad solenoid... If not, then the starter is likely bad.
If it will turn over with the key, then you could have a number of other issues. More information is needed.
The "buzzing" sound is probably the starter solenoid. That usually indicates one of two problems, either a dead battery or a bad connection.
If you are sure the battery's charged up then check the cable connections.
Clean and tighten the cable connections at the battery terminals, then check the other cable connections. Pay particular attention to the ground connection to the block, you are grounded to the engine block, right?
Clean and tighten the other three cable connections, the two at the solenoid and the one connection at the starter.
While you are doing this check the condition of the cables themselves, if there is corrosion or the insulation is brittle and cracked, it's time to replace them.
