i have a 2010 F150 STX 4X4 and was wondering how big a tire i can fit without a lift/leveling kit with no rubbing or trimming. Anyone with this already done, pics would be helpful... I'm torn between BFG AT's and Wrangler DuraTrac's. any ideas?
I'm really curious as to why you want to do this.
You just bought a brand new truck, it probably came with 17" tires but you are not satisfied and want bigger. I take it you want 18" as without a lift that's your limit.
You know what the difference is both cosmetically and functionally
between 18" and 17" ?
Dick.
Now, think of this as tough love not a slam on you, you are talking serious coin and there are a huge amount of things you could do to sport your ride without worrying about wheels. If Peer pressure is an issue, dammit grow a pair.
I dunno, maybe you have a ****load of money and need to spend it quick but of all the things to spend it on, replacing brand new tires and wheels with brand new tires and wheels sounds like money not well spent.

Personal opinion only, all the best to ya.
Well, i'm not looking for new wheels, it came with 18" wheels. And the reason i am looking for new tires is because i don't even have 10,000 miles on the stock ones and they are wearing like S*&%. in about 5,000 more miles they are only going to be good for dry pavement at best. next time you want to crucify someone because you dont' like what they are asking/trying to accomplish, why don't you get all of the details first.
Do you know what the difference is before and after you comment?
Dick.
As you said, think of this as tough love. All i need are some tires to fill up the wheel wells a little, nothing more. I dont' need the latest and greatest wheels and tires, just replacements.
On my 2004 with stock wheels and no leveling kit I was able to fit 285/65R18s and it looked really nice. Not sur eif you could go bigger than that without trimming and a leveling kit.
To RL201 personally I think that all new trucks have way to small of tire but that is my opinion. Who cares if he wanted bigger tires and better looking wheels? It's his truck he can do with it what he wants.

Incorrect, some of these trucks come stock with 20" wheels and the Harleys even come with 22". The size of the wheel does not indicate the size of the tire.
I agree that bigger tires on these trucks make them look a whole lot better.
You will not really lose any functionality upgrading from 17 to 18" but I don't think he wants to upgrade wheels. He wants new tires.
Anyway, I know on the 04-08 4x4 models that a 285/75/17 was the biggest size 17" tire you could get on without a leveling kit or a lift. I'm not sure if that has changed with the new body style though.

I hear ya! New trucks come with the cheapest version of tire they can get. Usually not more than a streat tread also. People who rip you for replacing "new" tires with new tires don't get it! They probably never take their truck off pavement and keep it in the garage every time it rains/snows. Good tires make a HUGE difference in a truck's performance. That said...I have seen 285s on stock F150s but nothing bigger without leveling kit and/or trimming. I am looking at getting the Dura Tracs when my current tires wear out, but have also had good luck with the BFGs also, I think either tire is a good choice.

I appoligize, It was not my place to lecture.
Now for the OP, I have been looking at alot of tires lately, as I also want to replace the crappy Goodyears that came on the truck. On avg, our 275/65-18 is about 32.1" tall. I have a 2" LK and I really want the Nitto TG 295/70 which measures 34.4" and with a tape from the center of the hub to front and rearmost outer edges where the tire would come in contact I believe I can fit it w/o problems. IIRC its around 11.5 wide ( I just need to save a little more money to get them). Now, the size above our stock tire is a 275/70 which averages around 33.2" tall. Measure with a tape and see what you think, its only 1/2 inch bigger around the whole tire . Or, if you have a good tire shop like the one I deal with they will mount one on your rim- preferrably a front- and see if it fits/hits. And I'm with you, I want bigger tires just because... I do think my truck needs a little more "meat" in the wheelwell. Its about personalization with me. Good luck, HTH!
I'm not so sure that Ford puts the cheapest tires they can find on all the vehicles. For example, my 04 FX4 came witn BFG's rugged Terrains, I drove them for 65000 miles and they still had some tread left when I bought new tires.
My wife's 2003 Escape came with Generals, I agree they were junk and we replaced with only 25000 miles.
My wife's 2010 Escape Limited, came with 17in Michelin Cross Terrains, not what I would call a cheap tire.
Last time I was at the ford dealership here I looked around, F150's and Super Duty trucks had anything from Hankooks to Pirelli 20 in tires on them.
They may not be "cheap" but are not what all buyers need for their application. They, meaning all manufacturers, put on "compromise" tires. They may be good but usually not a good all weather or all terrain tire, Usually street biased. That was all I was trying to say.
that I agree with you. Doubt you're going to find trucks stock with BFG A/T tires, well maybe the Raptor. But yes I agree about your "street bias" comment, 100%
thanks for all the input everyone... i stopped at a tire shop and the guy there said that 285/75R18's should fit just fine. i guess we'll have to wait and see.
