hey guys I am wanting to make a goose neck hitch and was wandering if I could get a piece of 3/4" steel that will lay in the bed and bolt it where the bed bolts go or will that be to much stress on the bed mounts? If anybody has made there own can you please post some pics and tell how you did it?
Thanks
My gooseneck hitch is fastened to the FRAME.. With it attached to the sheetmetal in the bed I would feel safer with a bumper hitch, but then again I don't use that either..
When we built ours we just used 1/2" plate and bolted the ball to the plate, cut a hole in the floor for the ball and bolted the plate to the frame through the box. We put spacers between the frame and the bottom of the box so when we tightened up the bolts they are tight and you are not trying to pull the floor to the frame. We didnt use the box bolts but I think we just made new holes. We have been using the plates for 15 years or so with no trouble. If you want you could weld the nut to the plate before you bolt the plate on, then you will be able to remove the ball if you want, we just leave ours in because they are farm trucks. I think the plate is around 18" long and wide enough so you are able to catch the frame, I think around 40" will catch it. I don't have a picture of the plate but this is my 86 and with this trailer we can haul just under 12,000 lbs of cattle with this trailer and never had trouble. I use 1/2" grade 5 bolts to fasten the plate and I usually get the 2 5/16 ball that has the big shank. Good luck with it. Also, depending on your trailer, you can move the ball farther ahead of the axle so it carries some weight on the front axle too.
