Steering column replacement

Hi there. I'm new to the forum but have been poking around for years for various fixes. I took my Ford off the road because it seemed like some type of upper bearing went in the non tilt steering column. Now I want to fix it and put it back on the road.

I dug deep in there and opted it would probably be easier to just swap out the whole top half of the column rather then figuring out how to get that shaft out and back in without problems. I do have a 12ton shop press however if I change my mind. Regardless eveything went smooth, even disconnecting the coupler with the little u joint in it. The one and only thing still holding this together it the tranny shift cable. I can't figure out for the life of my how to get it off. I havn't gone in there really pulling on stuff yet. There seems to be a bracket where the sheathing of the cable ends. This bracket is pretty far woven into the column. I can feel that there is a spot on top for the cable to pop up and out, but I havn't been able to get it. Again I havn't applied any drastic amount of pressure yet, but it feels like I should be turning something or moving something first. I can't see up there, just going by what I feel. In addition to that, the swivel where the cable terminates has my perplexed. there seems to be no screws holding it on and its alot different from the linkages I am used to with carbs, etc that just pop on. Can anyone out there help me? It seems like the whole process is extremly simple if you've done it before. I would really appreciate any assistance. I am so close and need to get out there quick to finish before I forget where all the bolts go.

It would help if you would describe your truck, what year, what engine, etc.
