So my wife was driving my truck home from work this morning and lost control. She hit a concrete retaining wall at over 40 MPH at 5:15 this morning.
She's sore but otherwise okay, which is the most important thing. I feel fortunate that she hit a wall rather than another car, so we're grateful nobody was hurt. Not sure what else to say at the moment, it's hard for me to focus right now...
Crazy how it peeled that thing open like a can. Something to be said about the engineering of these vehicles. Sorry man, but glad everyone is okay. That's the most inportant thing; trucks can be replaced.
All things considered it could have been much worse. Karri is very sore right now, but it looks like that's all it is. After another doctor appointment this morning and physical therapy this afternoon she's still having a rough time getting around. Looks like most of her soreness is around the area where the seatbelt was.
The pictures don't really do justice to the severity of the accident. Yesterday the body shop, after spending the whole day tearing it down, told me that the damages were well over $10,000 but the truck would almost definitely be repairable.
This morning they told me there was significant frame damage and that number went up to $23,000.
This afternoon I got a somber call from the insurance adjuster who told me after looking closer the damage was more extensive than they originally thought. 5 out of the 7 coolers out front, the front axle, radius arms, right side wheels and tires, front subframe, steering box, and lots more need to be replaced. They also discovered that the cab was twisted in the accident, the doors don't line up anymore and there's some slight buckling in the roof.
The cab damage put it over the edge, the final estimate was just shy of $28,000 in damage, which makes the truck a total loss. Karri and I drove over this afternoon to clean the truck out...it was one of the hardest things I can remember to walk away from it for the last time.
But on the bright side it looks like the truck actually appreciated during the time I've had it. I paid $35,000 for it brand new last year, and the initial appraisal shows the appraised value at $38,000. Add in the sales tax and subtract my deductible, I'm getting over $40,000 for it. So despite the loss, I actually made money on the truck.
Lots of things going on right now for me, and it's going to take me some time to figure out what I'm going to do now. I'm sure it'll all work out.
Its a shame to see your truck torn up like that Tom, but look at it this way.
Nobody was badly hurt and you will come out ahead money wise on the truck.
It could be much, much worse in all kinds of ways.
Well, Fly to ATL, I'll pick you two up (once the Mrs. is back to speed), I'll bring ya to Greenwood, SC where I live. Hook you up with my dealer and we'll get you out the door on a '11!
Will they let you have your '08? Lots of parts on there and the wizard in Green Bay that fixed his up may chime in here, since you're up that way and all.
Glad no serious injury or others hurt. Other bright side is if the truck had been repaired you never know what else would come up later possibly related to original accident but not discovered; or related to repair.
You will hopefully be able to put it all behind you and your wife. That is what insurance is for; sounds like you have a good insurance company too.
Sorry to hear about your truck, but on the positive side the Mrs is OK and your gonna get a new truck. I've been lurking around the 11s and so far the reports are pretty positive. Good luck.
