The whole point of terrorism is to paralyze people with fear and disrupt their lives. If we scurry around like lemmings gathering plastic and allow the government to remove our freedoms in the name of security...the terrorists have accomplished their goal.

Heard this on the radio this morning. They were interviewing a doctor that has been involved in a planning commision to come up with a Smallpox contingency plan, I think for the state but not 100% positive on the jurisdiction. He didn't go into a ton of details because it was off the topic of their conversation but the jist was this.
Anyway, he said that the duct tape and plastic recommendation came out of a report from a private foundation (you've all heard of the Ad Council) that had been working on a project meant to demonstrate some personal accountability issues. Well the report was due months ago but got delayed and the release date was reset and ended up just on coincidence being the day after we went to Orange Status on terror alert. Add in the fact that the Department of Homeland Security was indirectly helping out with it and the media takes off and says the government wants you to believe that duct tape and plastic will save your life, when that wasn't the original intent at all.
Just a bad coincidence that got handled very poorly.

Hey Colorado folks, let me know where you guys are going. As was said before Eisenhower will be useless, but we could always go up to Nederland or somewhere. I'll bring some beer.

To be fair, the duct tape thing wasn't just the media - it is actually in the official government guide to terrorism and emergencies:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/relea...030207-10.html

If you do a search for "duct" you'll come up with the reference.

However, having actually read the "real" report now I can see that they *did* mention turning off furnaces and any ventilation - that just didn't get reported in the media. Also, the mention of duct tape is in the "chemical or biological attack" section and not in the "dirty bomb" section. For that it mentions using a blast or fallout shelter.

The official guide on the government site is much better (and more accurate) than the distorted stuff reported by the media. Personally, I think what the media should have done was gave people the internet link to the real report...

Edited to add: Forgot to mention, you can get to the full FEMA preparedness guide through the previous link or directly at:
