Well, everyone here at work is talking about the suggestion on TV last night that everyone have duct tape, plastic sheeting, three days worth of water and three days worth of food on hand at home.

I already have the duct tape but my wife is out getting the plastic sheeting today.

Local schools here in the Washington DC area have decided on conflicting rules on what to do in the event of a chemical or biological attack. Some counties are going to lock down, not allowing parents to pick up their kids -- others will release their kids when the parents show up.

Can you imagine a parking lot full of parents who have been told they can't take their kids home?

I can't believe that anyone would actually think that duct tape and plastic sheeting would keep out airborn particles either of biological or chemical origin. An airtight room is a suffocation waiting to happen, otherwise you will have airborn particles. You could have your own air scrubbers and purification system, but it is quite expensive. That may work.

No, save you money because what the government is telling us is nonsense. It reminds me of the nuclear bomb scares of the fifties when they told us to build bomb shelters or hide under the desk from a radioactive blast. Sheer nonsense.

Duct tape indeed. The only place they need duct tape is over their mouths........

duct tape and plastic sheeting wont do anything for you unless you COMPLETELY seal off the area you will be in. the problem with that is that if you do seal the room off.....you wont be able to breathe in 12 or so hrs depending upon the size of the room and the number of occupants.

the best thing you can do with that tape and plastic is wrap yoursefl tightly with it and buy a REALLY good gas mask. no..that wont work either. the plastic will make you sweat like crazy thus dehydrating you and you wont be able to drink water because you cant remove your gas mask.

see a pattern here? honestly there isnt much the general public can do to protect ourselves against a bio or chemical attack. im not saying you shouldnt try and do everything you can but, im just trying to be realistic about it.

Ice: Exactly my point. This BS the government is putting out is just feel good crap. If you are really paranoid, then move to the hinterlands. These attacks will only traget specific areas where they can do the most damage.

DC: This perfectly points out how silly these people really are when it comes to viable plans. By the time a parent showed up at the school, everyone would be contaminated, and it would be no use to quarrantine the children anyway. If you are really concerned about this, home school your children and move to the states that border Canada out west. Otherwise, as they say, forget about it!.

Im not worried about it...
I live about 45 mins from a Nuclear Power Plant that supplies electricity for alot of places.
If they're going to hit anywhere in Arkansas they'll hit it. And I'll die before i knew it hit.
So no need for plastic and ducttape for me

yeah, we must have been typing our posts at the same time, you beat me to it. i didnt realize till i was done with mine and saw yours posted above it.

i agree with you about the alerts and the Gov. just wantin everybody to feel better. i do think something might happen in the next week or two but their really isnt anything we can do about it. there are so many ways to deliver a small to medium scale bio or chemical attack its almost impossible to stop it.

The sad thing is that not every american has enough duct tape at home just incase. I mean, you can never have to much duct tape and plastic.

Ice: Yeah we both jumped on that like a chicken on a June bug. I think the NYC subway system is very vulnerable. Any place where large groups of people gather that depend upon air pumped in from outside. For me, I am staying in the wide open spaces and will attempt to manuever upwind from any attack. Other than that, ah, see you in the next world.

Yeah, makes me feel good that they are watching out for me, duct tape and plastic, what a joke!

I've been reading lately that the kooks are predicting metro Denver would be a likely target for a chemical release. Not sure on the why, but since I live about 10 blocks from downtown I'll be a walking biohazard!

I guess it will give me an excuse to see how many things I can drive over and through with the Super Duty before I keel over!

CO4x4SD,
Come hang out with us in Wheat Ridge, and when it goes down, we can all run to the hills. You bring the Super Duty, I'll bring the beer and the ladies!
Personally, I have numerous places to go west of Denver (upwind) that if it did happen, I would hope to get a good jump on the rest of the people and get the hell out of town.
Good Luck!

I live right in the same neck of the woods as Surry Nuclear Power Plant, Camp Peary (CIA training), Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, Norfolk Naval Base, Little Creek Amphib Base, and Oceana Master Jet Base. If something happens here, either I'm going to be protected on base(still have a Marine Reserve ID) or I'm gonna die. If something happens, it happens and there's probably not gonna be a whole lot folks can do about it. And the whole plastic and duct tape...gimme a break! Unless you've got a MOPP suit and a gasmask with a new filter, there's not a lot you can do. I have a USMC issue gasmask, with an unopen filter canister, but it's not gonna do any good against a blister agent or other skin induced agent. Just live your life, and enjoy it.

Big Daddy, your proposed humorous response to grab the grits and gals and high tail it to safefy underscores a huge flaw in planning for any large scale terrorist attack - complete traffic gridlock. Block the Eisenhower tunnels for good measure and most Denver residents are trapped like rats. Fill the Super Duty with haf a dozen dirt bikes and gas if you really want to get away in hurry. One nice thing about living in Northern Obscurity, Wyoming is just a few miles away. After all those jokes about their wind, he who laughs last.......
