Yes, the replacement harness did it! No more sudden stalling. Patching up the cable with electrical tape helped until the replacement harness arrived. It was probably this call all along.
The pictures are spot on. I was driving from AL to FL when it started acting up on me. Car shut off two times inside 20 minutes. I went on-line and found several threads, but this sounded very much like mine. Lifed the hood, wire was rubbed and shorting out just like the picture above. Identical!!! I got some electrical tape, wrapped it up, problem solved.
See, I kept thinking it was simpler. The engine was running fine, then shutter, then off and loss of power. See, I wish I had read this earlier. I was out of town over Easter, battery light came on. I took it to Autozone, they tested alternator and said it was not sufficiently charging the battery. So, smart me bought a new alternator and put it on. Well, battery light still was on. So, with a New Alternator I go back to the Autozone. Same problem, alternator still not charging. (It was on the vehicle and in service, not on a test table). Guy tells me I must have got a bad alternator. So, exchanged me a new one. This time i bought the higher capacity one, if all else fails, "use abigger hammer". I put that one on. Still, no luck. Battery light still on. Back to square one.
After a great Easter day, family telling me my ride was toast, I read a tread that said check the alternator fuse. I did. It was blown. Replaced fuse, light disappeared. Problem solved. It was after midnight, Easter lost, car fixed. Now, knowing this, I bet they are connected. The short blew the fuse. When I replaced the fuse it was a temp fix until it stared shutting off my car. Issue got worse.
I plan to replace the wiring harness as suggested. That seems to be the long term fix.
Great post guys. Sorry for the long note. With 180k on the navigator, 2003, I have seen some crazy things. I need to get 300k+ to get my money's worth!!
I am also a victim of the navigator moneypit. My 03 navigator just started stalling out a couple days ago and was throwing the p0320 code as well as giving me a low oil pressure warning. I replaced the cam and crank sensors and inspected those cables and they look fine. I also inspected the alternator cable harness and it also looks fine although i am getting a batt light flashing when I rev up the motor.
Still nothing. i keep hearing about a re flash but i haven't found anyone that has had that the issue. Anyone actually had the flash done? I am going to run new wires the the crank sensor just in case but is seems like my truck just wants to be extremely difficult.
No. I am not sure about flashing it. However, I just replaced the cable and it is running so much smoother. I am not sure if the engine heat over time creates an issue with the voltage it can carry at low idle RPM's. It only took me about 30 min and $40 bucks on eBay to replace the cable. That battery light will come on when it is not charging and or carrying the correct voltage back to the battery. Also check your fuse box for the alternator fuse, make sure it is good. I have new crank shaft, cam shaft sensors, new alternator, and new fuse cable wiring harness to alternator. Finally got mine working right again.
That's what I'm hoping. I'm under my hood now taking out the cable. Although it looks I will be without a truck until I can find that harness. I maj attempt to just rebuild it. I am a mecp certified installer and it looks simple enough. The dealer is telling me 2 weeks to get the harness in.
I just looked at my cable and it was in good condition. I had re routed it awhile back so I didn't have the issue with the rubbing. I also didn't see any corrosion on any of the plugs. I made sure that the cables were good using my multimeter and re installed everything with the electrical grease. I just get a couple batt light flashes when I start up and it still stalled on me. Only thing I can think of is the reflash
Best of luck. I first attempted to order through the dealer, they actually ordered it and then called me a week later and said it was discontinued. That is when I typed the part number in eBay and found it. It was a quick ship. Hope it works for you.
Well it seems visually and physically ok so I don't know what the service bulletin means by corrosion. My gem module needs a reflash too so hopefully this gets the job done. Then off to the dealer to find a non ford product
So i just got my truck back from the shop and apparently Advanced sold me a pos crank position sensor. So she runs now but my charging system error light came on and the truck was not charging. I pulled the alternator and had it tested and while i was there i bought a new alternator plug and made a new alternator harness.
The alternator was good and now the truck runs and drives fine, except now my traction control light stays flashing and will eventually shut off the traction control system. any ideas on this new issue?
Have you verified all fuses are still good associated with your traction control? I know we had this issue in our car. We rode with the TC sWitched off for about 100 miles and then it magically started back? I will think. Got me puzzled a bit to
Hi, I haven't had that issue yet so I looked for that wire on my 99 5.4l EXPY. I can't seem to find it. The wires from my alternator go to a distribution box on the firewall before going to the battery for charging. I'd like to find the wire so I can do some prevenitive taping to keep it from wearing out and shorting. Can you help me firgure out hoe to find that wire. It's hard to tell from a picture so small. I can't even see the battery in his pictures. Is the wire close to the firewall. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Mike
