So, last week i had to fill my truck up twice....80 bucks.... ouch!
I know the engine in my truck is tired and seen better days, but... i drive it hard to say the least, hey, i pull a trailer.... about 3 week ago while sitting at the stop light some guy on a bus stop bench yells at me "Your Leaking Water!" i quickly look at my temp gauge and it's about normal for this time of year.... i give the guy a nod and go on my way. when i get home i pop the hood and nothing, I dont see and leaks... close the hood and think nothing more about it. get up this morning... check oil... check radiator fulid.... get in and start it up (after what seems like a lot of cranking) it fires up, check the gas gauge... just under a half a tank, now i'm on my way to work... get stuck by the train at Ina rd... head south on the freeway, now, i haven't even went 4 miles and my gas gauge now reads less than a quarter tank! My truck always smells like gas, but, this morning i'm thinkin yuck! something must be wrong? work is now less than a few miles away so, i keep driving.... just a few blocks away from the job and the gauge is on a 1/8th tank... get to the jobsite, leave it running... open the hood and the canister on the fuel pump is SPRAYING fuel all over! quick, i shut it off, The Damn thing was about ready to fall off! I guess when you smell gas you should check EVERYTHING!
When I read the title of your thread, I thought Dam Bill you must be in the low 3's in a quarter mile. Than I read the rest of it. Fix leaks!! If you smell fuel investigate! So did you get it fixwd? What was/is the problem?
I changed the fuel filter last month when i did the oil and filter and after fighting with it to get it loose....I thought to myself, dont tighten it up so much that you can not get it off next time. i guess i did not tighten it up enough.
So, i removed the canister and after the rubber seal dried out and went back to normal size i put it back together.... no more leak now!
haha! 80 bucks really sucks, but it is kind of a funny story. glad you're ok though and didn't get stuck in idk about 100 miles from home with a dead battery due to a bad alternator! lol
Glad to hear your truck didn't go up in flames! Could have been a diaster!. Years ago I was was crossing the Columbia Gorge in Oregon in my 1976 F250 on the way back from a camping trip and towing a trailer when I started smelling gas real bad, I was on a up hill grade with traffic both ways and no where to pull over, once I finally found a spot I jumped out and lifted the hood and the filter at the carb had split open and was spraying gas directly on the dizzy(Distributor) and you shoulda seen me run for the cab to shut er down. It was a long walk back to find a parts house but they had the filter in stock and another customer gave me a ride back to my truck so I was back on the road in no time. Sure was scary, your story reminded me of that time, I would have lost my truck and the camper and possibly the trailer and bikes as well!
I agree that if you smell Gas find out where the smell is coming from ASAP and correct the problem.
