power steering pulley problem
I've had a chirping similar to a bad serpentine belt or bad pulle bearing, and yesterday finally got off my lazy butt and figured where it was coming from, culprit is the power steering pump, is the pulley supposed to have any play in it? because I can grab the pulley and push it back and forth so it must be shot, question is how does it come off? it looks like it was pressed on there or something similar, I do not have V belts my truck is a serp if that makes a difference but how do I go about replacing this I know theres a special tool but I've seen many different versions all around the $30 range

I took the belt off and its fairly new, no cuts or chunks torn the rows are all fine, spun all pulleys and no squeak, span the alternator and it had a slight squeal but I only hear the chirping from the driver side of the motor, and I know its an accessory on the belt because when I rev the engine in neutral it gets louder, cant hear it that well at idle but driving its like nails on a chalk board, so in short im guessing its the p/s pulley bearing because thats where the noise is coming from and also from the stuff I did above

thats exactly what i thought.my belt looked perfect too.i replaced it and that god awful chirp went away.mine was extremely loud and very annoying.i looked all over, and swore it had to be one of the pulleys.it was the belt.
i found out by spraying WD-40 on everything i could, well i accidentally hit the belt, and when it slipped and caught again trying to catch up she spun and snapped lol.when i put a new one on,it was peace at last.
i started with the tensioner, cus it was clear that 17 yrs of tension on that spring, was done for regardless of miles.it had no strength to it.then i moved on to WD-40 hunt.

I had this same prob with the 6.0 believe it or not, new belt and fixed it and that was like a maze getting the nex belt on the front of that engine had to move the fan shroud and pull the radiator up, I didnt think I could be cursed with bad serpentine belt twice but we'll see lol was hoping it was a $5 bearing rather than $50 belt, well anyways for replacing this belt, I just pull the belt off all accessories and pullies, then will it fit over the fan blades? and then just fit the new belt over the fan and attach it to the accessories?

On a serpentine it's easier to see, the outside diameter of the pulleys will shine up ... But yes, it'll also show in the tips and valley bottoms of the V's on the serpentine.
Basically a Serpentine belt is no different then a v-belt, they both are supposed to ride on the sides of the V's of the pulley and not bottom out, if they bottom out they will slip.
-Enjoy
