Easy w/ breaker bar and pipe

I remember I use a 3' pipe over a breaker bar. I forget how the breaker attaches to the tensioner, I recollect just a 1/2" drive breaker bar into a 1/2" square drive recess but could be wrong. The picture looks like a socket on breaker bar onto the tensioner pulley belt.

What I do is get the new belt lined up on all pulleys EXCEPT the vacuum pump pulley on top driver side. Then, get the breaker bar and pipe on the tensioner, and sticking up vertically from the engine. Now, face the engine, pull the pipe towards you with your left hand to release tension, and slip belt onto vacuum pump pulley with your right hand. The long pipe gives you good leverage so you're not pulling real hard, and also makes it easy to reach both the breaker bar and the belt at the same time.

I wish the belt on my old Taurus was this easy.

hah, i didn't notice the tensioner wrench was going the wrong way on the picture, that is funny. good catch mike. haha.
i slide it on under the idler pully on the top while holding down the wrench with my left hand.
It's much harder to get it around the tensioner while pushing down.

Minor derail...anyone install the superduty dual pulley tensioner? Does the belt route differently?

They route the same? Just the super duty tensioner eliminates the fixed lower idler pulley.

I just swapped out my alternator, serpentine and tensioner. My biggest issue was not having a full set of metric sockets. I got the old tensioner off with an 18mm socket and didn't have a 15mm to get the new (and correct) tensioner back on. Other than that it was a piece of cake.
