I noticed that on my early build 2003 there is a sheetmetal heat shield between the turbo and egr cooler. I looked at a 2005 and it was not there. I wonder if there is any correlation between egr cooler failure and this shield being removed from later model motors. ( besides the change to a square tube design of the cooler).
none what so ever. it has to do with how the coolers are made inside. the 04/04 cooler is a better unit. If I ever put one back on it may just be that cooler and an o3 uppipe.

I have posession of an 04/04 cooler AND scoopless up-pipe that's only going to be a paperweight--hint hint
The 03/04 up-pipes don't have that huge honking scoop hanging out into the middle of the up-pipe to divert flow into the EGR cooler which equals less restriction to the turbo.

also the length of the uppipe to were the cooler meets the pipe is different.
I have an intake manifold, a square egr cooler and a scoop up pipe. Two out of three ain't too bad. Also one good head, one head that needs an intake valve, hpop stuff.
