I have had this noise ive been hearing for about a week, like a loud humming. No matter where i stood around the truck i could not find where it was coming from. Well i was working on my trailer lights and when i turned on the key while standing outside the fuel pump ran like always then it started making an odd humming noise, the one that i had been hearing. Has anyone ever had an issue with the fuel pump? my truck has 43000 miles on it now, just seems a little premature for this to start going..
thanks all
Your PSD has two primary hummers, the vacuum pump on the passenger side wheel well, and the fuel pump under the drivers side frame rail. Can you be sure which was making the unusual hum?
If you come back and say definitely fuel pump, then I recommend you get your fuel pressure tested, or else get a gauge. Low fuel pressure kills the injectors quickly on the 6.0. A fuel gauge is a very popular add-on because owners have learned how important it can be.
But not to scare you, it could simply be a vibration in the pump and mean nothing.
I would also start with fresh fuel filters if they have much time on them. Any variation in the fuel flow could result in a change to the humming.
Ok its the pump directly under the drivers side door mounted on the frame. Is this an inline fuel pump because i thought the pump was in the tank ?? Yes i am mechaniclly challenged, oh and spelling challenged also..hehe
Gassers have the pump in the tank. Not so on the diesel.
The pump is also the primary fuel filter housing. It is called an HFCM, or Horizontal Fuel Conditioning Module.
I have no idea why it is louder than normal, other than the possibility of needing fuel filters. Since you are not into mechanical stuff, I recommend you take it to the dealer for an expert listen and opinion. Changing the fuel filter is not the easiest thing on these. When were they last changed? Dirty filters should not make it noisy, but it's the only thing I can think of other than just plain failing.
bpounds i had the filters replaced and no more noise. You were correct about that being the problem. I had about 20k on them which doesnt seem like aot but i wont allow them to go that long again!! Thanks for your help.
