I have a 2000 F-250 with 38" SSR's on them. I Started hearing a humming noise come from the engine bay, and I for sure thought it was by powersteering pump going bad. It sounded just like a pump that had no fluid or low fluid in it. You know the RRR-RRR-RRR-RRR noise. Well I installed a PSC hydraulic assit on my truck that replaced the steering box, pump, and resevoir, but the noise is still there, and even louder. Could it be the Hydroboost going out on my truck?? Has anyone else had this problem?
I have noticed the same type of noise on my super duty. The noise seems to increase and decrease in volume at different times. Sometimes at idle it acts like there is no power steering and if you rev the motor it goes away. It just started doing this about a month ago. Scott
Odd, I too notice this hum noise real recently too, just after I switched over to 10w30 Diesel grade Motorcraft oil for the winter months. It sounds like it is coming from the Power steering pump but the pump is full & clean. After the truck is driven a bit the hum goes away.
If it has the Motorcraft PCV valve (the plastic one) that is probably where it is coming from. Mine did the same thing and replaced it with one from advance auto parts. It is a cheap fix maybe your problem too. You have more vacuum at idle so you will hear it louder at idle.
Okay guys, I figured it out. I noticed that the belt was reviberating inbetween the powesteering pump and alternator. I searched some more on the forums, and found that when people changed out there belts the noise started. This is what happend basically on mine for the most part. So I went to the dealership and had them replace the belt, and it fixed it. The key is to get a Factory Ford Belt, not one from like Autozone etc. That is what I did, and that is the probelm everyone else had when they changed the belt themself.
The noise is completely gone. Not even the Ford Dealer could explain why that worked, they just marked it down as a new trick for that problem. I also had my belt tensioner replaced, but I do not think that had anything to do with it.
I'll bet ya the tensior had alot to do with.
if you take a close look at the design of these cheap tensioners with telfon guts you'll see whay they make noise.
Man, I JUST noticed this exact noise 2 days ago and was going to post something about it.
So should I replace the belt AND the tensioner or can I just fix/replace one or the other? I'll go get the parts from the local dealership but I refuse to let them work on my truck if I can get away with it. BTW- I have about 70k miles on it.

My noise started when the truck had about 69,000. It is the original belt so I think I am going to start with the tensioner first and then the belt. Thanks for the info
I'm actually heading out of town in a couple days (4 hour drive one way), pulling a toy box trailer with a sand rail. Is this thing going to last or do I need to go buy one now just in case?
Well I would replace the belt now. It does not seem like the noise is harming anything, but more of an annoyance. The belt is about $50 I think. It will take you about 15 minutes to put on.
One think you can do is look at your tensioner and find the 2-3 lines on the bracket. Two of them should line up ( I beleive the long ones). If they do not then the tensioner may be bad. Usually that is not the case. It takes alot to make those go out.
My rig has 125K on it, and the noise started at 115K so, I drove that long without fixing it.

Did you cehck and see if your belt is vibrating back and forth between the power steering pump and the alternator? If so than you can guarantee most likely it is the belt. That is what mine was doing. It did it at idle, so check that out to be sure.
