what do you think?

I am going to buy my first Ford truck. It is a 1983 Ford Ranger. This will be my first ford ever. I am a chevy guy though . Anyways my plan is to throw out the 4 cyl and replace it with a 302 mustang motor and maybe bore it out but i dont no what to bore it out to? If you do please tell me. This will be a sleeper truck looks bad but with great power. I am thinking of changing it to a automatic instead of a stick. im also boing to put in buckets and the shifter will be like a swing around lock into place shifter in the middle of the seats with a custom arm rest. alot of custom stuff will be going into this truck. If you have any advise at all just drop a line back at me. Because I need all the help I can get. Thanks alot for everything Bye

well you will almost have to use a C4 tranny..and to do a good conversion to a 302 you are talking about 5k. Thats with a good built motor and everything built up to handle it, and a clean good looking install.

If you just slam it in there it will run but not as good as it could.

Well, as far as boring it, here goes. Remember, this is just MY opinion..

Boring out doesn't gain any real power. It's the changes to the fuel system, and combustion chamber that yeild that power. If you want to increase power, increase compression. Have the heads machined to decrease the combustion chambers, that'll take care of that. So will different rods, pistons, ect.

The whole purpose of boring out a motor is to remove any imperfections in the cylinder walls in a high mile motor that is being rebuilt. Often, if you have a well maintained block, even that is not necessary.

In short, creating a bigger cylinder displacement does nothing for you if the engine can't breathe in more fuel, and compress it more before combustion.
I recommend you talk to an experienced engine builder (lots of them specialize in the Ford 5.0) and get some ideas from him to help you meet your HP goal...
The good news is, that next to the Chev smallblock, the 302 is about the cheapest motor around for a performance build up, and there are more parts available for it than you'll ever freakin need.

But, once you drop that 302 in, hopefully mated to a C4, and a 9" rear, you'll have one FAST little machine!

Instead of a 9" rear, wouldn't a 8.8 out of a mustang, or a newer ranger that had the 4.0L, work just as well, if not better?
