I'm looking to swap a 6.9 or 7.3 IDI into my '77 F150 and need some help with the tranny. Ive seen that there are some(6.9's mainly) that are connected to a C6, so is that C6 different than mine(factory as far as I know), or would mine bolt up to a IDI? Basically, what are my options for the tranny, which needs to stay mechanical. I dont want to mess around with an electric(e40d and such) Thanks guys
Depending on fab skills and such.... most feel that by starting with a 3/4 ton truck (or more) presents fewer hassles! Not only may you consider some beef on the frame.... generally speaking the rest of the drive train is just not suitable in the long run! Too much torque!
The factory E4OD is what I used on my swap and I have not had any issues, I would recommend that or the factory 5 speed these trannies are designed to handle the kinda torque the 7.3. The only other trans I would consider would be an Allison but I dont know how you could get it 2 work with the 7.3.???or if its even possible???But I would have to agree with Hardrockn...starting out with an f250 or f350 you would miles ahead in the end. Although I have seen a 7.3 in an early bronco so it can be done.
I know a bigger chassis would be ideal but I picked this truck up for nothing and have too much work into it now to get rid of it. How would the E40D work with the IDI, as far as it being an electronically contralled tranny go? Also, I found an '88 f350 with a 7.3 for sale cheap, cant i buy the motor, tranny(auto is all i know about it) and rear end from it in my '77 and be good to go? any problems with that swap?
As long as you get the trans computer and all the wiring you need, that swap should be fine. The 88' should have an E4OD and the only computer needed is for the trans. The engine is mechanical.
Im gonna go take a look at it this weekend and as long as the motor checks out and it has a C6 I'll probably pick it up. Its too good of a price and too easy of a swap if it is to let it pass up. Thanks guys
We have just started driving the 74 with 6.9 C6 and 2.75 ring&pinion.
It still has enough torque to spin the tires and speeds up to 75
make for smooth driving
F100-F250s in the 67-72 use the same frame same i-beam's kingpins same front springs.I'm not sure but can some one say for sure if the 73-79s are the same way?
F350 is a much heavier
I'm gonna look at swapping the body of my '77 onto the '88 frame from the donor F350. I know it will be alot of work, and likely require I take the rear cab support from the '77 frame and move it over, but you all have me convinced it will be worth it. Ill post back after I take some measurements
