Transfer case shifting problems

The transfer case on my 91 f250, will shift from 2h to 4h but will not shift to neutral or 4 low. Seems like alot of force is needed. It seems there was a thread similar to this recently.

to **** into 4 low the truck needs to be neutral (auto or clutch pushed manual) at a slow crawl and will shift smoothly into it. Try that and see what happens.

Common problem as 4l is rarely used, lever must push down first and then back.;

some had to go to the left, then back, some had to push down on the shifter towards the floor then back, all need grease to keep them working right

Ya mine you go to the left then all the way back. I can't even go to the left and yes i did it with the clutch depressed. I'll check these out. I think it is just seized up.

My 87 goes "left" other two trucks both "push down", I was somewhat under the impression they changed em to push down type shifter in 91, so much for that!

I never had that trouble with the shifter in the 87, always shifted to any range wanted no problem.
Both the newer two tend to suffer the same as everyone else. Try to freeze up if low range is not selected for longer periods of time.

take everything apart under nieth, and greas it real good. if you keep trying to force it, you will break the houseinh the shift linkage goes truough, and it costs over $100 from ford, IF YOU CAN STILL GET IT. my son has broken 2 of them.

when i first got my 88' I didn't much about working on trucks. I took it to a shop and they took the linkage apart and said they had to use a torch to free up the joints in the linkage. but when they were done everything moves like butter. a couple of years ago i broke the linkage on my sisters 92'. Just don't force it if it won't come apart.

As Dusty said "all need grease to keep them working right " Try some PB Blaster to free it up then keep it greased.
