96 Powerstroke 4wd auto with manual shift transfer case.. transfer case slips and ratchets in 4h.. luckily I was able to get it back into 2 and it seems fine (for now)
i see there are two possible tcases in 96, bw1356 and bw4407.. pics I have seen on net they look pretty much identical.. anyone know how to identify between the two???
are there any differences in the cases between applications? diesel - gas - auto - manual?
You probably have a 1356, the 4407 is called heavy duty.
The 4407 is more rounder than the 1356...it's flat on the long sides...if that makes sense.
I have pictures if you need them.

please post em.. my tailgate has a 'heavy duty' emblem on it.. but I have no idea if it suppose to be there or not... thanks much
if i recall, the 1356 has a slip yoke on the rear drive shaft where as the 4407 has the bolt on flange
That's the easiest way to tell.
95 was the last year of the 1356, starting in 96 they came with a 4407
The 4407 has the number cast into the housing, probably the 1356 is the same but I'm not sure.

if your truck is a 96 then the heavy duty emblem on the tailgate isnt supposed to be there. Heavy Duty badges were 97 only, because there was a light duty (new body style) offered in 97. does yours have heavy duty under the F-250 badges on the front fenders?

My '97 has the 1356 and 2 '97's I maintain have the 1356 transfer case in them. so this is not always true.
