I have an '04 SD 4x4 with an auto trans, manual tranfer case, and a tired, but reliable, 5.4.
Question is what would it take to swap the 5.4 2v for a 5.4 3v or even a 6.8 V10 ?
Has anyone done this ? I know at a minimum ECM's but what about other harnesses (not the one one the engine as all engines I am looking at have their harness intact). What about the ecm/pcm control of my transmission ?
Would I be better to just go with a fresh 2v 5.4 ?
Why are you wanting to do the swap? There is a lot involved, and you could just as easily spend the lootski on hop up mods for your 330 and make nice numbers. I say pull the old block, get a good stroker kit for it, balance and blueprint the rotating assembly, do some head work and have fun!
The 5.4L 2V engine came with the 4R100 transmission. So, you will need to install the Torqshift transmission with either the 5.4L 3V engine or the 6.8L 3V engine.

That would let you use the same tranny, but I think the cooler and maybe some other things are diffrent.
If you really want a V10 thats fine, but have you thought about building a 5.4 up?
For the same money and much less work a 5.4 could be making as much or more power than a 2V V10.

I tend to agree! I have the 5.4L 3V engine and plan to install a Whipple supercharger rather than upgrade to another engine. It is expensive but way less difficult.
