I need to do my lower ball joints. I seem to remember reading good things about Moog joints. I did some shopping locally today and the NAPA guy didn't think much of Moog.
I came home and did some internet research. I actually found a fair number of compliants about recent Moog products.
The truck is used on lots of rough roads. I need something durable. I am now considering the NAPA premiums. I would appreciate comments prior to my impending purchase.
I also need a ball joint press, I want to do this at home. Reccomendations for an inexpensive tool are appreciated.
Everybody has a different opinion on the brand name they use. Myself, I installed the average every day ones from Autozone (with a grease fitting). Once in the spring and once in the fall I give them a dab of grease and I've had no problem with them at all. Granted it's only been 2-years since I put them in, but if you talk to some people, they'll tell you the Autozone ones will fail within a year and you'll end up driving off a cliff.
I am pretty sure I can rent it t Autozone, but I am not so sure I want to buy the joints there. Can I get the tool without buying the parts at Autozone?
I am sold on the Moog parts. I use them on my powerstroke superduty and they have lasted very well for me. Even with the abuse I put my front end through during the winter hanging 850 pounds of plow, on top of the 1000 pounds of powerstroke, they have worked great for me. I just totally replaced my whole front end on my Expedition and used all moog parts for the ball joints, tie rod ends and sway bar links. I think the small price difference between them and the cheaper brands is worth it. Call every parts store in town and price the parts out. I saved about 65 bucks doing that this time around. Just my thoughts.
I've used the Raybestos "service grade" ball joints from rockauto.com with good results. They're not overpriced, have grease zerks, and are well made. As for a press, I grabbed the "4x4" ball joint press kit from Harbor Freight on sale for $30, so I have it for all future projects.

First, every part made is going to have some people saying bad things about them, its compitition of sales and such. Going to Napa, the sales people think Napa parts are the best and everyone else's suck. I worked for Autozone for a few years and no matter what auto store you work at, you are basically trained to sell and act like the store name brand is the better. To be honest with Napa, I choose to not even buy a simple wiper blade from them.

I have put both side upper controll arm and lower ball joints (Motorcraft) and it has been two years and so far no problem at all. Now back to renting a kit that time i rent from Checker and there kit was awsome with alot of pieces to fit on any ball joints.....

+1, used them for my dads Econoline van which is heavier than our trucks... NO problems and it gets used everyday on the mean streets of NYC.
I'll definitely be getting the Raybestos joints when time comes to replace them on my Expy...

Interesting. Problem is, some research indicates that Napa branded parts are most often made by the more premium manufacturers. The ball joints in question are made for them by Dana/Spicer and get good reviews everywhere I have read. Their filters are most often Wix. When I was buying oil and air filters from them for my Porsches the filters were German branded Mahle or Mann.
I don't think Autozone can say the same. Who makes the ball joints they sell?
Dorman which has several names under them, as for the filters, give me a break, wix filters are one of the most over rated out there, damn fram is better than wix and this isnt just my 2 cents, its said in several sources not to mention you would be shocked to find out what company provides the filter element in their oil filters

Calling BS on the filters. Show me "several sources" that can prove a Fram filter outperforms a Wix filter.
Was it a requirement that you use drugs while working at Autozone, or did you take it upon yourself?
well to answer the only part of your question that needs answering *******, some people go to work when they are still in school, besides you sound like a napa freak.
So I am a freak because I want to put quality parts on my vehicle?
Tell me O wise one, do the parts cost less at Autozone because they are just smarter than the other retailers? Or might it have something to do with the quality of parts they sell?
You have chosen not to answer to your comment regarding Fram being a better filter than Wix?
Can we assume then that you are some kind of Autozone zombie then?
