Engine making oil

2008 F250 SD 6.4 PSD 33k miles. Oil has only been in 3k miles and I decided to change it because it was full to the top when short sticking (overfull and smelled like fuel). I changed the oil 2 days ago and it was half way on the dipstick after change. I put 200 miles on it and it had one regen. Now it is covering the whole dipstick. I talked to the guy at Ford and he said it's probably coolant. I told him it is not losing coolant becuse I monitor it closely. I will be taking it to Ford on Monday morning and talk to maintenance. To be continued.

One of the 6.4's short comings is that it likes to make oil. Seems like I read that it is probably a leaking injector. I am more familiar with the 6.0 but do pop in and out of here.

I had mine in the shop the other day for the same thing. It was 2 quarts over full. They could not find anything wrong with the truck, but acknowledged that something was not right. The diesel mechanic said for me to keep a watch on the oil level using the short stick method. Ford really ties the hands of the mechanics because they can't get paid unless there is some sort of trouble code. I think Ford knows this happens and will not do anything to fix it unless the engine does tear up while it is under warranty. My guess is that Ford is rolling the dice that the engine will last a 100,000 and then they will be free of obligation; however without the fuel getting into the engine it would probably last 200,000. I'm waiting now on the oil analysis report.

My driving habits do not include very much in town driving, but it has went from doing regens at 330 mile intervals when new to 150 mile intervals, now with 29,0000 miles. I don't what is making it do this, but they say everything is working fine. Needless to say, if it keeps up I will feel justified at ripping off the emissions crap to save the life of my engine.

about the only thing you can do is monitor all fluids and avoid in town regens. better to use tow/haul if you are regening and rpms are low.

I short stick mine all the time and it reads at the full mark. I does not read halfway as the book says.

Last oa for me showed <.5 fuel dillution.

Welcome aboard! Short stick is to insert the dipstick only until the plastic meets the tube and not all the way until it seats like one normally would.

OK, but why would one want to do that insted of putting it all the way down?

I don't think "one" would. But it's Ford's spec.

My manual--"Ford Spec"--reads to say insert the dipstick fully to determine the oil level. Is "short sticking" a documented method of checking the oil? Sounds like a work-around to make someone warm a fuzzy ab out too much oil. Or dipstick is too long?

Took it to Ford today. They said no trouble found. If I have a problem hopefully it will still be under warranty.

The short stick method is in the service manual (PC/ED section 4) as part of a troubleshooting method once the initial check with the dipstick fully inserted indicates an overfull indication. Some are taking this to be the method for checking your oil normally; I don't read it that way. My oil is at the middle of the stick level checking normally after an oil change; but, after 3000-5000 miles I have to use the short stick method to see just how over full it is. Below is the Special Service Message; it is easy to see why many take this to be the correct method for checking oil. Maybe the 6.7 doesn't need the 9th. injector but the 6.4 sure does......

SSM 21288 2008 - 2010 F-SUPER DUTY - 6.4L DIESEL ENGINE OIL LEVEL DIAGNOSTIC AID
ON 6.4L ENGINES, TO PREVENT SERIOUS ENGINE DAMAGE IT IS CRITICAL TO ACCURATELY MEASURE ENGINE OIL LEVELS DURING VEHICLE DIAGNOSTICS. TO PROPERLY DETERMINE ENGINE OIL LEVEL, THE ENGINE MUST BE AT NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE, VEHICLE IS PARKED ON A LEVEL SURFACE AND ENGINE OFF FOR 10 MINUTES TO ENSURE ALL ENGINE OIL HAS RETURNED TO OIL PAN. USE THE SHORT STICK METHOD DESCRIBED IN PCED HARD START/NO START DIAGNOSTIC SUBROUTINES-SECTION 4. IF OIL IS OVERFULL, CHECK THE CHARGE AIR COOLER (CAC) FOR LIQUID CONTAMINATION. SOME RESIDUAL OIL IN THE CAC SYSTEM IS A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC. IF THE CAC HAS EXCESSIVE OIL, ANY FUEL OR METAL CONTAMINATION, A THOROUGH CLEANING OF THE CAC SYSTEM IS NECESSARY. REFER TO WORKSHOP MANUAL SECTION 303-12 FOR CLEANING PROCEDURES AND PCED PINPOINT TESTS AND SYMPTOM CHARTS TO DIAGNOSE ROOT CAUSE OF OIL OVERFILL.

When I changed the oil and filter I put in 14 qts. Maybe I should of just put in 12 or 13? Will engine damage occur because of too much oil causing windage and foaming issues or is it that the oil dilution could cause bearing failure? I can't believe a brand new truck would have this problem.

Ford won't fix it but they say SOMTHING is wrong??
Maybe you could do another oil change and ""Accidently" put 4 quarts of oil and the rest fuel in the crankcase.
If you accidently did something like that you would get a code and maybe a new engine.
