I will need to rebuild my 79 plow truck after the snow is gone. I want to stay with the 351 thats in the truck because it seems to get all right gas mileage, I know I could put in a 400 crank but will that effect my mileage? I would like to keep it basic but would be looking for some added performance.
If I were you and since ya just want to stay basic and not too much of a performance build-up, just do your basic rebuild and add an aluminum intake, 4V carb and headers. Double roller timing chain with an adjustable crank sprocket would be a nice finishing touch advancing it 2 degrees. That shouldn't take away from your gas mileage (if you can keep your pedal off the floorboard!), and give you more power!
I just finished a rebuild on 351M. I went a little more. I found a set of the forged TRW 2466F with heads being shaved .020 I estimate around 9.1/1 CR. I did a home port and polish on heads had to have it bored .030 over. comp cams 260H Kit. stock intake and carb( just purchased a Holley 4412 2BBL not yet installed). I am pleased with performance. went over my budget alittle but had it balanced also and splurged on pistons . complete rebuild cost=2,500. and thats replacing everything.
workin hard, The 400 won't get any worse mileage than the 351M, and you "will" notice the increase in torque and a little more horsepower.
Just find a 400 and build it while your still running the 351M. Not as much down time that way. Everything from the 351M will bolt right to the 400 with no problem. This is a drop in install. You would not regret going this route.

I really hate to buy another engine to re-build, really all I would need is the crank and damper right? If I did get these items would'nt I be better off investing that money somewere else on my 351m?
A whole engine shouldn't cost that much. You never know what parts you'll need for your 351M until you take it apart. It's sometimes good to have spares. I would look for a late 400, since they have the strongest blocks.
workin hard, It seems I have read on here that you have to change the pistons also.
Something about the wrist pin height is different on the 400 versus the 351M. Something like if you use the 351M pistons on the 400 crank, the pistons will rise to far and hit the heads?
I'm sure if this satement is not correct, someone will say so.
I bought a complete 400 for $100, and it helped a lot to reduce "downtime". You need new pistons anyway, so that's no big deal. The 400 even had an an aftermarket intake, which saved me some more. I'd try for the 400 if you can.
