question - good source for 351W & AOD

Looking for the best year or range of years from which to get a 351W and AOD. Intended usage would be a 53 - 56 F100 where I want torque and mileage. Like to put my foot in it from stop lights but need good highway mileage as I drive aprox. 60 miles a day to and from work and gas in CDA is aprox. $3.10 a gallon.

Would likely do a mild port & polish, 4 bbl, possibly headers and a good ignition. Probably nothing else.

Would consider EFI but not crasy about screwing around with computer controls.

What's a good source to ID cars/trucks from that year/range of years that would have the 351W & AOD reccommended? Chiltons? Motor ?

question - good source for 351W & AOD

Ford did not offer many vehicles with that combination. 351W usually came with a C-6. The AOD trans can be beefed up to last behind a W, but the production AOD's were a little light duty for the W power. Another drawback of the AOD is that you have to exactly calibrate the TV linkage to get a precise kick down when you step into it, otherwise one step in can eat the transmission. I almost went with a GER aftermarket AOD, but in the end, I opted for a TCI aftermarket C-6 behind my W. Another option would have been about a 90-95 model E4OD with electronics, but I don't drive enough miles to worry about the cost of gas. Chassis picture in my gallery.
