missing a little bit.

my new to me truck is missing a little bit. its good on oil, new plugs, wires, and fuel filter. but when you give it gas in the lower rpms it shakes a little bit like you have a miss. weve put fuel injector cleaner in it as well. what else should i look for? i already checked all the plugs and wires again. im going to check those again when i get home from work today but anythign else i shoudl try looking at?

Your rotor and cap. Missing definitely caused by insufficient electrical current. Mine also did it at about 2,000RPM but ended up being the pick-up coil.

well it was my pick-up coil. Then I picked up a new one and it was faulty. I ended up replacing the damn distributor. I don't know what to look for exactly in a distributor but I know they do go bad but it's rare. Lets hope that isn't your problem. Just check your cap and rotor first. You haven't replaced them have you?

Oh no i doubt that distributor or pick-up coil go out in 77k. Yeah very highly possible that it is in need of new cap and rotor.

Easier to find the problem if you find out what cylinder or cylinders are the cause of the missfire.

If it spark related for example you can pull one wire at a time while the motor idles/misses, (careful now, high energy in there!!) use rubber coated wire pliers or gloves , pull the one on the cylinder causing the miss you won't hear a change in the sound of the motor.

Once you know that you can try some things to find the cause of the problem, swap plugs or plug wires for example from the problem cylinder to a known working cylinder to see if the miss follows that swap.
Say you swap two of the plug wires, one from a properly firing cylinder to one with a miss and the miss follows the swap, if it does you know the cause.

I'd also check and verify the fuel pressure is up to spec.

danr1 has a point. Had the truck already been doing this before the new plugs?

it had been having alot of power trouble when we got it. we though a good tuneup wuld be nice so we got new plugs and wires. it helped a little bit but still didnt solve the problem. we started thinking that it was fuel related so we changed the fuel filter and it was almost perfect. but now it acts liek it had a little bit of a miss now. so that makes me think i shuld check the gas pressure maybe?

i picked up a new distributer and cap today anyway. cant hurt.

how would i check the fuel pressure?

Yeah as always people start with the basics. Well testing fuel pressure requires a gauge and you connect it to your fuel injector rail. It's easy to spot. It has a little black screw on cap. But wait why don't you disconnect the green vacuum line that goes to your fuel pressure regulator first. Tell me if the problem changes. Don't drive around with it disconnected though. Just rev your engine a bit and see if the problem persists. Also if fuel drips out of the vacuum line or it smells alot like gas when you disconnect you could be looking at a faulty fuel pressure regulator.

yeah to see if it makes any difference. You should be able to tell if it's missing.

EGR maybe? More of a bucking than a missing though. Disconnect and plug the line going to the EGR valve and see if the problem goes away.

doesn't hurt to try this too. Engine light might turn on but don't worry. You might find the problem. Hey forgive me but I am gonna be busy today and I might not get on. Hope someone else chips in though.
