having issue with starter, starts up on first time but after driving it for awhile the next time it acts like the battery is not charging. there is plenty of juice, new battery, it might take a few attempts and finally catch. just freaks me out that i might get stuck somewhere and have an issue i can't deal with.
I am assuming it's cranking really slow and finally starts? That might be a starter problem or a timing problem.
Or is it cranking fine but you just have to crank it longer when it's hot? That might be a leaky injector or injectors. You can check your fuel pressure with a guage(if you have a test port for it) and see if the system is leaking down.
And as always, check for any fault codes in the computer.

These are exactly my questions, as the description of the problem is confusing:

It acts like the battery is not charging (which implies there could be a lack of voltage from
the battery) but the next statement says there is plenty? Have you measured the voltage
at the battery? Be more precise in your description.
you got it right with your questions, cranks real slow then finally catches. automatic tran, 302 v8. it sounds like there is a leak in the exhaust, but haven't located it yet
haven't checked voltage after it is hot but when its cold it cranks right up, if it wasn't charging i'd probably have the same symptoms in the morning but thats not the case. only had this truck a short time and really haven't driven it that much. short runs around town no problem but drive it a couple of hours then the slow grind to get it running again. so far it hasn't failed me
If you have an exhaust leak around the exhaust manifold over the starter, it can puff hot exhaust gas onto the starter and overheat it, causing it to drag.
