Hi Chuck, I started by making a new bumper out of heavy rectangular tubing. I made a tire carrier only that pivots on the right end of the bumper. When you swing the rack to the closed position, you drop a handle into a catch on the bumper and lock it tight with a cam action. I could supply you with more details if you are interested.
Chuck,
If your going to do it, build it to mount on the bumper.
The body tub won't support the extra weight of gas cans and a larger swing away. Eventually, it will tweak the tub. I had one on mine for a while that used the OE tire carrier hangers. It was fine when latched, but as soon as it was opened, it would drop almost 2". This was with a 235/15 tire and 2 empty cans.

I hadn't counted on that. Good thing I asked.
Ok, then what do you guys think about my alternate plan. Go with one of those "pre-runner" type mounts with the spare in the cargo part directly behind the back seat?
You know, where the tire is kinda at an angle out the back. Complete with the twist on hold-down lock.
Then just mount the cans on each side of it.
I'm building a "sunny-day only" type roadster. No top, tailgate or doors. I've got the door inserts. Maybe get a bikini top to go with it. Cool, huh?
Ok, I'm rambling but that would leave ZERO cargo space, but what else do ya need? lol
Hi Chuck, I think your idea would have a more cool look to it. With no rear window to lift, you have more options for mounting the spare and the gas cans.

Yes, it has the dual tanks option. Very good point Steve.
In all honesty, I would never have carried gasoline in them. One for water (radiator) and the other for "looks". You know, you have to look like yer goin' for the "Camel trophy" lol.
