whats the best performance cam for 460's? i.e. comp, lunati, howards etc
i have a 460 for my 77 f100 after all help an advice i am building with federal mogul engine rebuild kit 178-300. it's a .30 over std main an rods (9.14:1 with 92cc heads) i had my d3ve heads decked .20 and an smog hump ground down an gasket matched. i'm just taking a stab at it but i figure round 8.8 to 9:1 comp. heads are bare. when i get the cam i am gonna buy complete kit with chain, springs, cam, etc. i have headman headers, procomp hei distributor, procomp wires, stealth intake, 800 edelbrock. so what would be the best cam? most duration an lift? i am gonna run a c6 an stall suited to cam. i have 3.55 gears in a spooled 8.8 rear. jegs said they would run comp xtreme energy 274/286 .562/.565

I'd get rid of the 800 cfm, it's too big for what your building. I wouldn't run one any bigger than 750. I'd get rid of the 3.55's too. You are building an engine that will need to turn more rpms to be efficient. Not knowing your tire size I wouldn't recommend a ratio. As for a cam, I think your on the right track with the lift, but IMO more duration. I stay away from dual pattern cams in big blocks. I run a Lunati #96 & it idles pretty good. You couldn't have picked a better intake. Get your valve train geometry set up right and you will have a nice strong motor.

i really doubt that edelbrock is too big....sorry to disagree with you mark, but i just got done taking a bone stock 460 put a crower cam with .510 lift intake and .536 lift exhaust edelbrock 750 carb and ede performer intake, headers and exhaust and i still had 1.5 in of vacuum at wide open throttle, thus needing a bigger carb....if you plan on putting a high lift cam in your truck, pay attention to the exhaust side...as we all know 460 has some of the worst exhaust machining in the world....make sure you get a cam that will allow it to breathe all the exhaust out so it gets a good gulp of fresh afterwards I am running the crower cam and i love it....full specs are pn 22903 lobe seperation 112* adv dur .268 and .286 and @.050 .210 and .226 and gross lift .510 and .536. overlap of 54* has a pretty noticeable idle and works well with stock parts, no spring changes (as long as yours are newer and not worn out) works with stock convertor if running an auto and is great for low to mid range torque. Very good company and i have yet to hear anyone knock them. KEEP THE 800.

ok. i planned runing an auto an a c6. i have a 3/4 ton 4x4 on 36's i just acquired with a 400m i am gonna put in till i finish my 460. i got blessed with a bad knee an just had surgery anyways the 400m bellhousing with fit the 460 right? also i picked up a brand new procomp hei distributor an wires for 40 bucks it was brand new the guy deciding he liked biking better then hot rodding so he sold all his stuff cheap. the dist will fit the 400m right? if the bellhousing fits a 460 too i could run a granny 4 speed with the 460. i like a standard i would give up alot but would gain in some areas so its a toss up. i also acquire a 302 the block is junk but crank an rods good so i may toss 302 back together throw it in 4x4 an put u joints ab ball joints in it an sell it or keep it to hunt/play in the mud

All the parts you listed(distributor, ignition, bellhousing) for the 400m will work perfectly with a 460. So it makes it really easy for you. Sorry to hear about the knee surgery, it is a trip, im 23 and just got done having that a year ago, so good luck....definitly with the 460 you can dump alot more in with just a good lift cam so stick to your guns and put a high lift cam and keep that 800, my truck is at a professional dyno shop and went from like 180 at the wheels stock to 300 hp and 450 ft lbs of torque on 33's with just a intake, headers, cam, carb, and ignition system and mine is a f250 with extended cab long bed! Not bad for easy-mild bolt on's. good luck with yours

that would work fine for me on hp/tq i want round 400hp i dunno what that would equate to at the wheels but the tq is awesome. i may just stick with 4 spd an instead of money to convert to autp spend ti to lower my truck. undecided i am decdied on 460 an keepin the 800 edelbrock. truck mostly just gonna be a work/fun truck so i dont have to get to extreme with it. ya man knee surgery sucks im just 28. but anything is better then waht i had before.

Hello guys!!! I am kind of looking for the same answer to this question. That camshaft you mentioned you used in a bare stock 460 +fordmanjoe1987, can it be used with solid lifters? If not, what is my best bet for a 460 with solid lifters as far as the camshaft goes? I would really like a Comp Camp, but anything will do.
