I understand that, but the smog test is just a 2 step idle test, the limits aren't any different for 49 or 50 state.
What it seems to me, the "tech" might seem to be a nice guy, he is really just sending the OP on a wild goose chase for some reason.
I tend to agree. Probably to save his own butt from giving out wrong info. If he gave info for a 49 state truck, and it's infact a california model, then he could get into trouble. In California they are not alowed to give you any info really, so it's an improvement from california.
If it has the required parts for COLORADO then everything should be fine.
It depends on the laws of each state. The law in california states that it must have Original Factory Smog, or be retrofitted with newer smog with engine swaps. In California, a 49 state smog vehicle cannot be retrofitted with California emissions. It has to have what came with it new. It's even against the law to add catalytic converters to a vehicle that never had one. The laws may be simular there.
If the registrar really wanted to be that **** about things they can easily look up the vehicle title history and see where it was originaly sold.
That could work, it could also be inconclusive, if the truck was bought out of state. He probably wants the owner to do the work.
I know Denver is much stricter than they were in Northern Colorado, but they are implementing the AIR PROGRAM up here in 2011 and for the first ever in rural Weld County. I'm glad my truck is exempt, it would never pass now. It was a pain back in the day.
That seems more strict than even california. Even here our Older vehicles are exempt if you live at or above 4000FT. Especially if it says as much on the emissions lable.
I still dont understand what all of the hoopla is about?!?!?! open up the emissions book that the smog guy has, point to the "calibration" your truck has and call it good. If its one smog shop giving you grief, take it to another shop. Talk to the smog guy and see about his attitude. If he is cool, or at least reasonable, he will get you passed through as long as what you have matches his book, and you pass any visual tests and sniffer. I am not a smog tech, but I have taken many vehicles that were missing all emissions equipment, or had motor swaps hakced in, and made them pass smog with flying colors. I reference the same books the smog techs have and make them match. I've had smog guys say they cant touch the vehicle because I need to provide carb EO numbers for stock factory replacement parts I've bough from the parts house, I just go down the line to the next shop who has common sense. Techs wont risk their licenses by passing baloney through, but as long as it looks right, they wont batt an eyelash. A motor that never was available will get red flags raised, then its ref time, but its the same difference, if you have what the book says the motor is supposed to have, you get passed off (assuming you followed the other rules)
cliff notes, find what you are supposed to have in the book, find a smog shop with common sense and be done with it already.
I don't have my books in front of me to verify the emissions diagram, its the only one I could find for a 77 351M. The chart (once the acronyms are decoded) will tell you what they are looking for.
being that I just came from 21 years of efi 5.0 fox mustangs, I'm somewhat of the local emissions expert..unofficially. I took pride in building my cars while retaining all the smog equipment.
It sounds like you're a professional in the business from the way you speak. The information that you're giving out is great information, and if you are a smog tech, then that is the perfect information to give out.
However, being that I live in california, the worst state for emissions, and I don't do this for a living, but am EXTREMELY up to date on the subject, I'm telling you it's just not a big deal.
These trucks are 33 years old. The bottom line is no one cares about them anymore, and you can get away with anything you want because of that. Smog techs generally don't care either. All he's got to do is go to another shop and say "smog it"...if they have any questions, all he's got to say is yes sir, the truck was bought and sold here, been here all it's life, blah blah blah. So long as it's got a functional egr valve and pcv system, he's not gonna fail.
the bottom line is, as the above poster said, so long as his truck matches one of the descriptions in the book for that given year, he's gonna pass, and it won't matter what dso it's from unless you get a real real picky smog guy, then just move on three blocks and take your cash elsewhere.
I think the important thing is to let THEM ask the questions and not the other way around. I know how vital it can be to ask questions ahead of time to just make sure things are square and even, but in this case let them do the talking.
It's THEIR job to make sure the vehicle is emissions compliant. And as Masterbeavis pointed out, it's just a diagram they go off of, if they even bother to look.
The 3 most important things are:
Visual Smoke Test
Curb Idle emissions
High Idle emissions
After that the tech will look for the requisite smog control devices using the diagram. For your truck I bet all they will REALLY look for are cat(s) and PCV valve... Test is $15 and you get a free re-test. After the 2nd re-test the truck still does not pass they will THEN consult the vehicle owner on what he/she needs to do to get the vehicle to pass. Before that they can't or shouldn't really give any advice.
Ugh, that calibration shows the dreaded Vacuum Venturi Amplifier. I can not find that thing in the aftermarket to save my life! I've only seen it on F350 460s till just now....
well, for what its worth, I just picked up a 6/77 f-250 4x4 with a 351m/ 4 spd. My emissions label on the drivers side valve cover is a D7TE-4C485-BSC. engine displacement shows 351 CID, engine family is 351/400. it shows my truck is a non catalyst truck, DSO is 72( California). it is an EGR/AIR pump engine. and still has all the usual smog stuff- thermostatic air cleaner, egr valve, vacuum ported switches, vacuum amplifier, etc etc.
anybody know where I can get the emissions label new ?
