Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and just purchased my 1956 Ford F100. Looking to find info on history of the truck. Purchased it in Louisiana. I've identified everything via the vin but am stumped on the color code and DSO. The door tag shows a "s" for paint code. I've found nothing that shows that color code. Also the DSO is 640164. Can anyone decifer this for me? The truck has big mirrors and cab lights along with a factory built grille guard.
Thanks Kevin
Welcome. The "S" is Special Paint, maybe fleet colors for a company. The DSO is Dealer Special Order meaning it wasn't just bought off a lot. No way I've heard to decipher the number. Given the grille guard, lights, and color I'd bet it was a fleet truck. We like to see pictures. Stu
That's what I was thinking. I did just find that the first two numbers "64" of the DSO shows it was from Loiusiana but the assembly plant is Louisville, Ky. Weird. Here is a few of it, body panels are rough but cab is immaculate and virtually free of rust!
It's in fine shape. Is the green original can you tell? Maybe a Bell System truck, except for no utility bed. Unless Bell also had standard bed pickups in their fleet. Stu
It looks like it is the original color because dash and doors are the same. Not original bed per the guy I purchased it from and he only had the truck because of a group purchase that required him to take the truck too. He only wanted a Pontiac. So don't know much on history.
Nice truck, in pretty good shape! And welcome to FTE, the best Ford Truck Forum on the World Wide Web!
A few points: I think DSO stands for domestic special order.
Not the original bed? I can see a slight color difference. So maybe Stu is correct about being a Bell truck. The utility bed could have been replaced with that pick up bed.
Or is the cab and front end color army green? It could have been an army truck. Did you notice the grille was painted red body color?

DSO 640164:
64 = New Orleans LA Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.
0164 = Domestic Special Order number, truck ordered special by the original purchaser, not "bought off the lot."
The records for these trucks are non existant as FoMoCo THREW THEM AWAY decades ago, but...
One reason for the 0164 DSO number: Truck was painted a special non standard color per the original purchasers order.
It could have been painted Bell Telephone Green, the same color that Packard painted most engine blocks from the 19teens thru 1954.
Thank y'all for all the assistance! Seems like a ton of knowledge in this forum! I will be taking more pictures tomorrow and try to post them soon! Thanks again! Not sure when I'll be able to start working on it but I'm sure excited to get rolling! I just finished a 66 Fairlane Gta so my "allowance" is slightly drained! Maybe the wife will understand!
