mine did the same TODAY. we where going to the mountains, got 1.5 hrs of a 4.5hr ride away from home and noticed smoke. just a drip at first by time i pulled back in my yard, it was a stream of fuild coming out of the rubber plug. my excursion(v10) on has 68k. could it be the Torque Converter? i was pulling my 10k lbs camp. My Vacation is done!! So i guess i need to get a seal? thanks Dwayne

If the seal fixes it then consider yourself lucky. The extra heat we have had lately is not helping things at all. What gear were you in most of the time? Did you have Overdrive off? After hearing about these problems I may try to rig up a monitor to tell me when the TC is locked. When it is not then you better down shift and back off. Also it will help to turn off the AC when pulling a hill since the trans cooler is behind the AC coil. I am glad Ford had their priorities straight when they did that.

I replaced my seal a few weeks ago. Mine is a V10 4x4. It's not hard, it just takes a while. The seal was $8 from Ford, and it took me about 10 hours working alone in my driveway. If I had to do it again I could do it in half the time or even less with a helper.

Did the seal fix the problem? You left that important bit out. Might be worth putting in a new torque converter if you are going to pull the transmission anyway. I think a new one from Ford is a little over $200.

Good going, I used to do that for a job (r&r) but I had an auto tranny jack, ect.Just wondering if you had to pull the front pump (haven't done any in a long time).

Yes it appears that the seal replacement fixed our leak problem. There was no scoring or damage to the neck of the TC, no obvious slop or wear to the pump bushings, and there was minor uniform wear to the seal when comparing the old and new seals side by side. The pump does not have to come out, just slide the TC off of the input shaft to expose the seal, which is driven into the front of the pump. No I didn't replace the TC. The rig was driving fine, it just sprung a leak. I'm calling it a worn out seal. That thing endures rubber on steel crankshaft RPM friction, I'm really not that surprised that it was worn after 92K miles.

Glad you got it fixed. Mine was making a funny noise and I thought it was the torque converter and it turned out all it needed was a fluid change.

When I was a kid my job was R&Ring trannys and when they were leaking up front 99% of the time it was just the front pump seal. We used to jerk them out with a slide hammer puller with a lip on it and just knock a new one back in. Some converters had a rubber seal that went around the converter where the 2 halves were bolted together but they were usually OK.
