Have a 05 PSD with 100K (had the 90 & 100K service don in mid march). The past 2 times we towed our horse trailer (about 10ish lbs) over a grade the light as come on with a substantial powerloss. After stopping and shutting the truck off the light went away and everything was back to normal (and pull similar hills with no problem).
Any ideas?
Outside temps were mid 70s and mig-hi 80s
Thanks
the truck already had egr, head gasket and HPOP already replaced under wrty(ext. one)
This is exactly how my 05 PSD oil cooler failure reared it's head. At first it only happened on the highway at high speed or with towing, then a few weeks later I saw a pure white cloud of steam come out of the exhaust while tugging my boat out of the water that nearly blocked out the sun - it was impressive.
I would venture a guess that your oil cooler is plugging, or plugged, and you need a new one, and possibly an EGR cooler as well.
Beware my advice, however, I am not a tech and know very little about these trucks - just relaying my story.
If I'm right, you need to get it looked at soon as some believe that you could hydrolock your motor if this isn't addressed.
I hope I'm not right.
Very good call on the extended warranty by the way!
Good luck!

Reason: warranty
i understand what you are faced with. my light came on last fall and one time in april w/o lost of power. recycled key and i was back on the road. north of moab,
utah the light came back on with a lost of power, later that day the same thing happen again and the next day i was looking at the turbo psi gauge and the gauge hit 29 and the truck shut down. each time the truck shut down i was towing over 13k tra. 5ver and the truck would restart after recycling the key.joe hall ford in lewiston,id. just repaired the truck.
1. replaced the turbo. said turbo was sticking and the egr motor worn out.
CODES FOR TURBO P0234-OVER BOOST
P0299-UNDER BOOST
EGR VALVE P0404-EGR CIRCUIT CORE
the tech said the engine turbo max psi boost was 27.5 and when you see the turbo psi boost going highter you were starting to have a problem with the turbo.
i always use a fuel additive and clean the egr valve every 10k miles. also the dealer said that the coolant shoul be changed every 30k miles to prevent the oil cooler from burning up.
note. the dealer in va.couldn't find a code on their machine even tho the light had been two times.
i want to pass the inf. on to the FTE members. thanks for the help you gave me.
ps the total cost including an oil change and tax was 2549.28
I'd check to see if the delta between EOT and ECT exceeded 15F...the truck should have a stored code if so. Considering you said the 90k & 100k servicings were done, I'm going to assume it was the dealership doing the work...which means I'm willing to bet the truck is "current" on the re-flashes. I spell all of that out because the last couple of re-flashes will put the truck into limp mode & light up the CEL when parameters are exceeded on the engine. The CEL won't go out until the parameters return to acceptable levels. You had the EGR replaced...going to assume your talking about the EGR cooler? Do you know if the oil cooler was replaced since it's generally the item that starves the EGR cooler of coolant, thus leading to it's failure? Is the EGR valve plugged in? It needs to be to keep from future overheating issues.
When the light came on and the truck acted like it lost power, was the engine fan on? If your not sure what it sounds like, it will sound like one of those large drum fans that you see around sporting events. Of course there are other items out there...and since the truck lite up the CEL, there is a code stored. The best course is getting the codes pulled. But I still think there is an issue with the oil cooler...sounds very text book to me from this side of the computer screen.
Had a similar issue getting on the freeway - higher boost than I've ever noticed on my truck, over 80 MPH and then a wrench light. I've been using a scangauge and knew my delta on EOT/ECT was fine and the truck was up to temp. Through some searching around on here - I dont recall the exact chain of research that led me to the solution - I ended up cleaning the egr and exhaust back pressure tube and sensor - both of which were pretty carboned up. I havent had the issue again since. I've repeated my "test" runs under the same conditions almost daily as its on my way home from work. They may be worth a look....
Best money you can spend on this truck is gauges!!!!!!!!
The easy plug-n-play ones like Scangauge II or Edge Insight will save you many hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
Hook it up to your computer when you get it home (Edge Insight) or spend some time typing in the gauges (scangauge) and you get a powerful tool.
Even if you don't do that and you just plug it in your truck straight out of the box they'll still be extremely capable for what you need.
Those gauges would have told you if your oil and coolant temps were out of wack long before you ever made this trip. Would not have cured the problem but might have prevented you from getting stranded, being at the mercy of a dealer/garage or from blowing an egr cooler or flooding the coolant passages with oil, or a bad FICM ... etc, etc, etc....
