Your trans requires a special tool for proper filling of your trans. I suggest that you bite the bullet and take it to the dealership for the fluid and filter change. They will show you the tool needed and it may be available from a parts store.

there is a drain plug about 1 inch size. pull that out and you will drain the 5 quarts in the pan. then take the pan off and wash it out, change the filter, wipe off the valve body, etc... the gasket is rubber and can be reused on the pan... now look at the drain plug. it has a smaller 1/4 inch plug in the center of it. remove the small 1/4 inch (about) size plug and notice the BIG 1 inch (about) plug has a stand tube soldered to it that goes up inside the pan. you install the big plug, then put 5 quarts of MERCON 5 into a weed sprayer and pump the oil up thru the smaller hole. the oil fills up around the stand tube. when it starts to run backward, the pan is full to the top. your suppose to run it 5 minutes to warm up, then check again... i always measure what i drain, and put a couple cups extra in for the refill... i have a photo somewhere i will post.

I forgot to mention that some of the trans have a drain for the converter and some don't, so check yours and if there is a drain plug you should drain that fluid also. Ford says to replace the threaded converter plug at each service but I've had no problem with reusing the original repeatedly.

Weed sprayer....., good thought. Thanks Steve and Ortho? too.

My 2001 F150 has a converter drain, my 2002 Exp does not... somewhere about that time they stopped installing the plugs... it would be nice to get all the fluid out (converter holds 8 quars, trans holds 5), but i just do the 5 quarts every other year, clean the pan, and replace filter.. Not NEW oil, but constantly refreshed and cleaned.

The chain is definately bad and the planetary set is junk too. I haven't done anything with it as yet because I don't know how the clutch is supposed to feel. I'll get to it soon.
