I have had major headaches sometimes just getting the rear drums busted loose to get them off. If you run into this, take a large hammer and hit INWARD on the outer corner of the brake drum all around and hopefully it will bust loose.
If it seems loose, but won't come off and seems a little springy, you need to get into the access hole and loosen the brake shoes to get it off.
Watch out for spiders too.I had 4 come out of one side, and 2 the other when I pulled my Drums.
Just a quick question if anybody has an answer,What exactly determines 28/31 spline axles? Rear Gear Ratio?GVWR? Does it have to do with the Power/Manual brake F100 junk?
Actually, I have no clue what made the difference in earlier years. I have been told that all 80 and newer trucks with 9", had 31 spline axles. I cannot cite any solid sources beyond what a few junkyards and others familiar with these trucks have told me.
I'd love to know 100% for sure......
Wait a minute! you have never done brakes but you are tackling changing a 3rd member?
I'm only eighteen, this is my first truck, have done the whole front braking system (rotors, calipers, pads), never been taught about them, this is a really long sentence.
Gotta learn somehow, sometime!
Plus from what i've read people have said, this is a very easy thing to do? Pretty much disassemble, put in, assemble, done, correct?
Btw do i need to get a gasket for when i swap these?
Should i be replacing these copper washers? Noticed them when i was removing the nuts from the donor axle.
If you have a camera, take pictures of the rear brake assemblies for future reference. It might also help in case you accidentally knock something out of place.
FordNFishinLover will probably ask this pretty soon, so I'll beat him to it.

The older donor has the copper washers, but more than likely the newer '81 does not, I believe they stopped using the washers, my '84 didn't have them.
So, if that happens, should he use the washers or not use them.

Good luck on the change-out!!!
You got that turned around a bit, my donors from a 84-85 i cant think right now. An its going onto my 81. The axle im removing right now is from the 84-85 and it does have the copper washers on it.
The washers are just for sealing purposes. I don't know what the problem is with using silcone sealer, and if you did, you would not need the washers. Silicone sealer is all the factory uses on the newer rearends with the rear sheetmetal plate.
Get it real clean on both sides and use a good gasket. If you have the copper washers,
by all means use them. They help with sealing and were probably eliminated at some
point by the factory as a cost saving measure.
Just got around to the rear axle again. I got my donor axle from the 1985 pulled out from the truck. I currently have the brakes removed and I have taken the bolts out and pulled out the axles. (which are 31 spline) Btw its hard as hell to count the splines on the axle end, so easy to lose track haha.
So now my problem is that the third member seems stuck on the axle? I remove all the surrounding nuts, but do i need to remove the nuts where the driveshaft was on the third member? If i recall there are like four kind of odd shaped nuts? I thought it should break free with just those surrounding nuts off so i tried beating on it a bit and prying with a screwdriver but no go.
Any help on how the hell to break free the 3rd member would be great. Also what oil should i use for the rear end?
Try to drive a screwdriver behind the housing to get it off. Do this up high on the axle so if you marr the sealing surface, you can file it down and it will also have less tendency to leak up high.
