Anyone using one of these systems -Yes, I know there are alot of Tymar Air fileter users, but I like the idea of using outside cold air - when its 95 out every little bit helps. Of course at 95, cold is very hard to find.
I have the AFE unit on my Excursion and am very pleased with it's performance. I am with you on the fact that cold air is better air, and with the tymar, you are sucking in warm/hot underhood air....

A study done on the Tymar showed minimal temperature increase in air with the open element filter. Once you are moving, the cold air is forced under the hood from the grill anyway. Some people with the Tymar have installed a heat shield betweent the filter and the engine and have also kept the factory snorkle in place. If you are not moving, the engine will get more air with the Tymar because there is no restriction. The restriction around a boxed intake limits the air unless you're moving and one your moving the Tymar gets the same cool air as a boxed intake. Just my opinion, everyone can draw their own conclusions and spend their own money. Regardless of what you buy, there are vast improvements to be made over the stock airbox setup in most cases.
Thanks for the input. Have been following the discourse with Tymar, AFE, etc over the past months - this study/test of the impact of heat on a Tymar system is new info I had not seen before. Just trying to get as much info/experience before I turn my plastic loose as the MRS is only going to let me do this once.
You just need to do your own research nd pick the best intake for your truck / driving style / etc....I would say go with a intake that pulls in air from the grille , and not from the engine compartment , but that is my opinion , as i am allowed to have. Just seems that whenever someone questions the Tymar, there is someone writing a huge post on how the Tymar is the best , and thats that....
Yes, driving style, budget, etc. all are important considerations. Really wanted to trade in to that 6.0, but sounds like there are too many issues right now - So guess I will keep my 7.3. Have had great luck with it the past year -it starts great in the cold, gets descent mileage (when no cruising at 80), and does not leak anything. Lots of strong opinions etc. on which air filter sets ups are the best - which means there is probably several that would work well. The volant is sort of pricey compared to most and just wanted to see if any FTE folks had choked up the dollars to try one.
