460 crank casting numbers?

460 crank casting numbers?
How do I read the casting numbers on a 460 crank? Or wher can I find some info the numbers? I have been told there are a combination of eight numbers and letters that will tell me everything I need to know about the crank. Thanks

Ok, I got that part. What do all the numbers and letters mean. How do I break them down and find out what year, make, and model.
I went to your website (Nice website) and looked at your Ford part number web page. I didn't see were it broke down the crank ID.
The reason I am trying to find out this info is that I have a 460. It is supposed to be a '72 460. I think when I rebuilt it that the people that done my crank work may have switched it on me. I need an enternally balanced crank but I thing I might have an externally balanced one. The engine is together and running right now. I am in the next week or two going to pull it and figure out if I have the right crank or not. I am trying to find out about the casting ID so I can do that.

heep70, Anything with a 2Y number on it is from a internally balanced 68-78 460.
The 3Y is an externally balanced 1979 and up 460 crank.
Are you having a vibration problem?
Using the 79 - up externally balanced crank, requires a weighted flexplate or flywheel and a different style spacer behind the crank dampner.

Yes, I have the vibration problem. Like I said before, I think the mechine shop switched cranks on me. I am getting ready to pull the crank of a '76 460 and swap it into mine. The ID on it is "2YABC" Plus I will be steel stamping it so I can ID it when I get it back from the shop.
The best I can figure out on the "ABC" part is that it is the revisions done on the crank castings.

That's correct.
I suspect the 3rd revision which would put it around 74-76.
A 79 460 crank was a 3Y
