if i wanted to change my truck to efi what would be the best way to go about it? i know that it would be easier to buy a whole other truck to get al the harness'. ,but what years would work best. could i only go up to a 1986 style or would a newer style motor work, and would all my guages in the truck still work? thanks
This should be helpful Ford Fuel Injection Home There are speed density and mass air systems. I've been told mass air is better, so you would need a newer system, not sure when it started. Just changing your engine to EFI should not affect your gauges (unless you cut the wrong wire) And when changing to EFI make sure you get a truck plenum as the car ones are shorter and produce less torque. I don't know much about these, I just read everything on the ford fuel injection site and everything they have has worked so far. I personally hate computer crap, but to each their own. I have a 86 302 EFI system and a friend has a 96 351 EFI system so if you need pics of anything let me know.
I have the 1986 efi system in a 302 as well. I like the way it runs and how easy it is to fix... The ignition system is a little b*** sometimes but those parts are pretty easy to fix. I think the lower and upper intake from a efi 302 or 351 from this generation would just bolt on then it would just be a matter of swapping the harnesses and getting the pumps. I think it would cost about 300 dollars if you got every part from the junk yard. But it could get expensive depending on availability of parts and where you get them. I think the disty's would just frop in but i would check with someone first.... ford fuel injection is a great sight.... Oh and our ecu on the early fuel injection trucks is barely less intrusive then the late carbed models.
If you are going to make the effort to go fuel injected i would taylor the job to your intentions, because there are different vintages. The newer trucks perform a little better but personally the mustang injection beats all. I'm sure money is a concern because you can put a lot of money into this project. So determine your use and budget and go from there.
My 85 302 is fuel injected and the computer is under the dash like a mustang. That will make it convienyent to install a mustang harness. My 85 runs good also and i switched over to 5 speed with no adverse affects.
Definitely don't forget that when Valve Cover gasket replacement time comes, the whole upper intake plenum has to come off to gain access to the Passenger side Valve cover. This can be quite the job.Very important to remember where each Vacuum Hose/Wire goes.Just somethin to consider.Good luck with the swap if you decide to do it.
