Well since I am going to have to replace my heater core, I figured while I am in there I would replace the evaporator as well and begin my project of restoring my a/c.
Could anyone point me in the right direction for the source of replacement parts for my a/c?
LMC's evaporator prices are on the high side. NPD (National Parts Depot) also has them at a more reasonable price.
You also might try finding a local auto a/c supply, prices might be better.
Some of the national chains have the base parts at very reasonable prices rebuilt or new available over night. Do the research and decide if you want to go back all original or updated. The old York/Tecumseh compressor is a power zapping beast. The newer compressors are very much better and far more reliable.
I work in the parts field. i would buy the new stuff or NOS if i could for my truck. But you have to make the decision, are you going original or is modified ok?
A totally new system with a new axial compressor would be extremely reliable and not eat up too much power or gas. The way the system cycles is far better design than the old system. The old piston compressor, York/Tecumseh, is a rugged design but it eats up the gas and power and it cycles completely differently and often freezes up.
I just did mine last week. No local parts places could even order the evap.
I tried napa, autozone, advance, etc.. etc..
I ended up ordering from LMC, it was $299.95 with $31.75 delivery and handling fee.

What was that for Red, the remanned York compressor? I'm thinking about going with the Sanden unit on mine.
I wouldn't change the evaporator or condenser. blow them out with compressed air. New hoses and filter/drier and compressor. pull a good vacuum and recharge. next year change the filter drier again and recharge. oh and make sure to put new o rings on the expansion valve.
There is an ac system for classic and street rods that makes a saden compressor set up for F Series upto 72. Wonder if that system could convert to 73-79? The sanden comp, evap and condenser would make a great, efficient, and cost effective. Like i said beofre, it is not factory correct tho.
I am looking for efficient and cost effective system not neccesarily factory correct as long as it doesn't just look like a hack job under the hood. I have heard good things about sanden so I am looking that direction.
However, I like the idea of checking a few parts before i just start buying, seems like I have plenty of other things to spend money on for this truck
To be honest, I dont know. The guy I spoke to was in Texas and he will want to know your specific application so they can get you the right one. I think either will work with the correct head.
