What Air Intake System

1999 F250 7.3 auto trans 2WD... I recently started towing a heavier trailer about 10k and need a little more power for pulling grades. I was thinking of upgrading to a free flow air intake system but was wondering what kind if any increased performance I might get and which one to buy? My truck is completly stock...

Plus maybe adding a Edge Programmer mostly for the guages and tow mode. I understand that tow tuners will change shift points and what increased risk I would be putting on the trans by changing shift points?

You won't notice much improvement at all just doing an intake, it would take a seriously sensitive but dyno to pick up any improvement from just an intake. I personally would steer you in the direction of getting a 6637 filter set up from Clay at Riff Raff diesel click the link, he's a great guy and can help you plan all this out. I would also talk to him about getting a set of gauges and a DP tuner loaded with an decel tune a 60tow tune and an 80 econo tune. I would also get a bigger auxiliary transmission cooler and a transmission valvebody. You may want to think about a 4 inch exhaust or removing your muffler and going straight pipe to help with your exhaust gas temperatures. I know it sounds like a lot, but when you start modifying these trucks, it really wakes them up, but you need to monitor things properly, as well as improve other things to help the mods that you do work better.

All I can say is I am very happy with the AIS with the optional "Sleeve" thats in my 2002 F350for the last few years. I know the AIS is more costly than the 6637, but at the time I didn't know about the 6637. I will honestly say from what I've read the 6637 is a good product at a decent price. If I already didn't have my AIS set up, I would have no problem with the 6637.

AIS if you are towing alot. That 6637 can get on your nerves on long towing trips. "Pssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss ssss"

I switched to the AIS after a long trip of listening to it.

Orezona,

Interesting, didn't know that? Like I said, I am very happy with my AIS set up, quality product made for the Ford Powerstroke by Donaldson.

I ran a 6637 for a year & got tired of the vacuum cleaner sound on long grades. Good flow, good filtration, can't go wrong if you don't mind the sound. I now run the AIS & am very happy with it, especially knowing this is about the best filtration available. And much quieter than the 6637.

I was running an AIS then went to a 6637. After less then 9 months I re-installed the AIS with fender sleeve.
If you can afford it go with the AIS.

At the moment Riffraff Diesel has the AIS on sale.

What he said. Except depending on your preference you may or may not want the 6637 filter. I didn't have mine on long because I hated the noise. Some love it, some hate it. I really like my AIS.

Banks now has their RamAir closed box setup for the 7.3. I am putting one in my excursion as we speak. Going away from the open air filter system. Hope I like it.

Banks Power | 99-03 Ford - 7.3L Power Stroke>>Banks Ram-Air® Intake System

And it has the fender-sleeve mod. Does the hole on the side snap fit into the hole in the fender? Or is there a sleeve of some sort?

The kit comes with an "Edge grip seal" that seals around the entry into the fender hollow area, plus it has the forward facing inlet where you use your stock inlet tube.

Jason.

From the installation instructions:

13.
Locate the Banks Air Filter
Housing assembly. Install the supplied
Edge Grip seal around the side opening
facing the left side of the vehicle.
