I have an 79 bronco custom with a 351 modified in it. I believe the timing is off because it idle's real low until it stalls out and sounds like a couple cinlinders aint firing while its running. I tried to turn the distributor but it is seized in the engine and cant pull it out. I dont know if I need to get down to the timing chain to play with that or if i need to yank the distributor out and replace it. Also if anyone happens to know how the firing order is. I googled it and wut i found on there is weird.
My Haynes manual is for '80-'96 but the 351M firing orders shown there is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 I don't know if it is the same on the '79. The cap clips are between 3-7 and 5-4. Soak the base of the distributor in PB Blaster or something similar for a day then rock it back and forth with a wrench. Timing chain, put a deep socket on the harmonic balancer in the end of the crankshaft and see how far the crank easily turns each way. Pop the distributor cap and ask a helper to tell you when the rotor moves while you turn the crank back and forth is the best way to judge it.
Clean out the small gap around the base of the distributor where it goes into the motor with something sharp and spray penetrating oil in there. You can gently tap the base of the distributor side to side with a block of wood afterward to help the oil get in and do its job.
I did not notice you are new to FTE. Welcome I'm sure everyone will do their best to help you.
Since you are in a very cool climate I would replace the heater core or at least remove the hoses to it and flush it good both directions with a slow stream from the garden hose.
