If it were like a c6 we wouldn't be having troubles : -) I agree solenoid makes perfect sense from a chatter perspective....up hill equals a solenoid downshift probably.
I found out tonight that mine is also making noise with the OD disabled. Now if the torque converter locks up with OD off then it still could be the TC clutch. A guy on another forum told me that when the fluid gets old it can make the clutch vibrate.
I tried to say the same thing from the toilet at work today HA HA HA but my phone died. Couldn't imagine why.
On a serious note, I had similar troubles w/ my 96 thunderchicken. after 30k the trans just plain wasn't happy w/ the fluid anymore. We will be changing out the F150 this weekend and posting an update.
My brother has a 03 F250 and my Dad has an 05 F350, both of them make a strange sound coming under the passenger floorpan area. I am convinced it is a pivot bushing issue...
Mine is fixed. I changed the fluid in it by doing a total flush. I also took the pan off and it looked brand new in there. There was a very small amount of steel particles on the magnet but no aluminum and no clutch residue. The fluid was brown that came out. It seems to shift much better and the buzz is 90% gone. Occasionally it does it but I think it is getting better as the old oil washes out of the clutch material in the TC. I also found out that the TC does not do a hard lock. It uses pulse width modulation so it is constantly feathering the clutch in the TC, so occasional vibration during lockup is probably normal. I am a happy camper.
perryg114: What's it like being the man anyway?? LOL
Well done and good write up on your findings.
How did you "flush" the system and what fluid did you replace it with if anything specific?
I will try to get my pops to change his this weekend as well and hopefully that will confirm everything. The noise makes even more sense being a PWM driven signal and why acceleration would make it show and go.
I got a lot of info from this forum. If you go over there talking transmissions don't let them know you are a gasser. They don't like gassers over there. If it don't burn oil then you don't exist LOL. Read all the way down and you will find my post at the end.
