Left Alternator

I have a 2006 Ford Expedition XLT that just went over 86,000 miles. Just recently, it has been giving me some problems. After taking it to the dealership, they told me I need to have the left alternator replaced. They quoted me a price of @$2000 to have it installed. That seems pretty steep. Am I being taken to the cleaners? Is this something that can be replaced for less?

Tom

my guess is that you are being taken! i work for ford, and cannot see it being that much. there are several alt choices for that year, but each vehicle only needs one. i can get you the info you need, but i need the last 8 digiots of your vin. should start like "6la?????" or "6lc?????"

you need the basic 110 amp alternator. it appears to sit dead front center of the engine. you should be able to do it yourself. book time is .7, so if the shop charges
$100/hr, it shouldn't cost more than $70 to install it.

I apologize. I have been sitting here looking at my post and realize that it is not my alternator but my left catalytic converter that needs replaced. I am sorry for the confusion. Not sure where I got alternator from.

Again, thanks for the help.

the oem lh cat unit "retails" at about $1050. there's no way it costs $1k more to put it in. i'd just go to a custom exhaust shop and have them weld in a universal. out the door for about $300-$400. i had my 2 front ones removed and replaced with straight pipe for $200.

you can get that oem converter for a lot less if you know the right people.

I used to have an Uncle that worked for a dealership, but I don't know anyone personally that might be able to get me a deal on one unless you are offering some assistance.
