I have an 06 F350 crew DRW. Truck has 46K miles on it. At certain speeds, the transfer case groans. Some have suggested the transfer case shift encoder motor. What are the symptoms when this unit goes bad and is there a way to check it before replacement?

How do you know it's the transfer case?

On that truck, you have a hanger bearing for the driveshaft - that's the more likely problem.

Carrier bearing is new. crawled under it on jackstands.......deffinitely the case

I doubt the servo motor would do anything, sounds more like the bearings in the transfer case. Did you check the fluid yet?
