blue smoke
It was a Turbonetics, not a Garrett, but same carnage when it has a catastrophic failure.
This is why you want to get it taken care of as soon as possible.

Looks like I need to put a Turbo unit in. I started looking on Ebay and found many rebuilt units for around 5-600 dollars with a one year warranty.
I was wondering how much should a swap run? Guestamate? Thanks again for your help gang! I really appreciate it

Problem is PaysonPSD, I'm not knowledgeable at all with turbo units at all. After looking on Ebay, I popped the hood and took a good look. I really don't think this is something I can handle. Especially without someone with experience. It is kinda burried in the Back and she has 220K. I figure there will be some very troublesome rusty bolts that will end my attempt.
Thanks very much for responding to my issue.
I really don't understand people sometimes??
Probably better off with a stranger

You should tackle some smaller maintenance jobs and work your way up to some of the more
complicated stuff. That is what I did after joining FTE back in late '07.
Good luck and I hope a friendship doesn't get ruined over this.

This just looks like something I don't want to do. I have a bad back which will not help. I was looking at it for 5 minutes yesterday and it hurt

If one thing in this life I learned is not to rely on anyone. My friend never even called me back? No price, no nothin?? Still friends but now I need to find someone to do the job
for a couple of days I generally have to take a couple of days off to recuperate.
If you were in AZ and not NY I would do it for you.
I would gladly pay you for your time.We made some headway. My Buddy is charging my $250 for the job. I do have a few questions
#1- Since the turbo took a crap, There is oil in the exhaust system. How or what do I need to do if anything? I figure it would smoke like crazy till it Burns out? Possibly catch fire???
What should I do#2- I understand there was a few different Turbo units in this year 7.3. I took a few pics
#3- found rebuilt units on Ebay with a 2 yr warranty.Around $700 but They give back a $100+ for the core so it will end up about $600.
#4- I need to get all new clamps. A few gave my bud a hard time getting off so he feels we should get new to be safe.
#5- I know I need a gasket set to plug the new unit in.
I saw one unit that uses a different turbo that has Banks wheels to help with the low end lag. It's actually cheaper but only has a six mo warranty.

I would gladly pay you for your time. I would never take money from nice people. But Jerks, on the other hand, would be a different story.

What should I doI had an aftermarket exhaust and took it off and cleaned each piece. I'm glad I didn't install the muffler that came with it. It would have been impossible to get really clean. I wouldn't worry about fire. I drove 45 miles and pumped seven gallons through my exhaust without flames.

99.5 to 2003 all had the same stock turbo. A Garrett GTP38 journal bearing turbo. Early 99 had a slightly smaller turbo with what we call a Wicked Wheel for the compressor.

Buy from Ron's Turbo Service for piece of mind. There are other places to buy but I have not heard to much about them.

This kit from Guuzzle's Diesel O-rings will have what you need. But Guzzle has

But will be back on the 18th.

Banks just uses there own branded type wicked wheel.
If you want stock get a GTP38. Easiest install.
Edit : Can't tell from the pics but if the up-pipes are sooty where they go into the collector, which means there is an exhaust leak, you should install new donut gaskets. Beast done when turbo is off.
You have answered a lot of my questions and have been a great help. Thanks very much, Ricky!!
So just plug her back together and run it? Don't worry bout the oil in the Exhaust?
I'll look at the down pipe and see if shes sooty and get a Dunkin exhaust donut
if needed. On a good note. I scored a clean tailgate yesterday for $150. The guy that was going to do the tailgate and fix my rusty rear wheel wells I asked near 2 months ago????? This whole thing would have been someone else's headache as I'm lookin to off this truck after our 7 year marriage and get me a dodge(mercedes) sprinter. I do a TON of drivin. The fuel bills are killin me. My Buddy just bought one used, 5 cyl mercedes motor. He's getting 27MPG with some weight. He sells steel for knife making. I'm starting to make knives myself.

Ouch!!
