Starter Fell Off.....Twice

I am asking for a friend of mine. His starter has broken the mounting ears and fell off twice in the last two weeks. It is a first generation ranger with a V6 automatic. We have no idea what might be happening. There is nothing that stands out as hanging up. Anyone have any thoughts what he needs to look for? Thanks.

Has he tried mounting a new starter and Lok-titeing the bolts without overtightening them??? The ears are usualy made of cast aluminum and dont stand up well to being tightened up too far.

It sounds like the starter motor is not setting flush to the bell housing and the bolts are stressing the ears causing failure. Make sure you are not using the bolts to pull the starter into position. Be sure the mating surface is clean. Another thought is that the bolts were not tightened properly (left somewhat loose) allowing the starter motor to move a little. That could cause the stress. Are you using new or rebuilt starters? Maybe the ears were cracked before installation. Not likely but possible. Check the ears on the next one closely before putting it on.
