hi i have a 1979 ford F250 with a 400 in it and on the valve covers it has a hose for the pcv valve and on the other side, off of the oil fill cap it has another open bare hose and i was wondering if this should be blocked off??? is it going to hurt anything if i dont?? this is how i bought the truck and i dont see anywhere for it to go..it gets pretty dusty around here sometimes and i dont any of that getting in the engine.. any help would be great...thanks
mike
One hose should run from the valve cover to the PCV valve, then to the carb base, that way the vaccuum sucks the crankcase vapors back into the intake manifold.
The other hose is for air to be drawn into the valve cover then out thru the PCV valve on the other cover. It is usually connected to the air cleaner so it draws in filtered air. Sometimes it has its own separate filter, but most of the "newer" trucks have the hose to the air cleaner.
If your truck has the original air breather, the hose that isn't connected to anything is supposed to hook into a tube on the side of it. There is supposed to be a filter on the inside of the breather housing which is entirely seperate from the air filter the engine uses for the fresh air into the carb. Just look on the side of the breather for a die cut hole for this filter tube to attach this hose to. It may be missing and you will have to obtain one. If the engine has an aftermarket breather (open element type then there is a way to attach a hose fitting to the under side of it after a hole is made. The filter for the fresh air to the carb filters the air on this setup.
Just like was already mentioned, the PCV hose connects to the base of the carb. Don't get these two hose mixed up or you will have a very sick running engine and could even cause damage to it.
