'96-2003 ranger ABS is 3S/3M, 3 sensors-3solenoids, so this is not 4 wheel/4 chanel ABS.
It is common practice for previouse generation of trucks to use simplified versions of ABS, ABS of all brands had thise versions (Bosch/Knorr/Benix, ATE, Wabco).
There were 4S/3M systems, but ranger ATE abs use VSS for rear axe speed monitoring.
But later versions of ranger avalable here have 4S/4M abs, so 4 ch. modulator and one brake hose per one wheel and four sensors. 4S/4M let activate ASR function, but as I know ASR is available in EU only. Seems to me becouse Euro calibrated engines have "electronic gas pedal" and ABS unit may drop down power via CAN, US engines have cabel controlled throutle and ASR will not work.
I have the Abs and brake lights coming on in my dash. Replaced the rear ABS sensor on the diff. Have`ant looked at the front sensors, I understand they are independant to each front tire? Can I pull and clean them up? Thinking its more then that since the abs and brake lights both stay on. Reset the computer with the code reader but the dash lights stayed on. Different sensor problem maybe, PCM fault? For the record here are the codes I am getting: Continuous test PO113,171,174,442,733. During the KOER test: 1703(Brake On/Off Switch out of Self-Test Range) and 1780. Can`t find what that is referring to any help.
P0113 - it is air intake related code, try OBD-II DATA monitoring to see what is the current intake temp., PO117 - ECT value is wrong, 442 - had this code when my gas tank cap was craked, 773- lock up circuit. Well, first of all inspect ECM wiring, is connector corroded ore not? are there broken wires? try to swap sensors with good ones. if all sensors actuators are OK, you may have internal PCM problems. Last week I got truck with faulty PCM, SAK167 processor (it was OM906 engine) had bad digitiser (Analog-digit converter), but usually all sensors are connected to processor via operation amplifiers. But there is one interesting thing. All sensors are powered with 5V from PCM and sonetimes bad wiring ore bad sensor cause voltage drop lower 3.8V and all other sensors read wrong. Yeah, there are comporators inside PCM for all sensors to make PCM more tolerant to voltage changes, but not so much so measure sensors power supply with DVOM and it it is low try to disconnect sensors one by one to find one that shorts all circuit. Well, I do not belive that all temperature sensors are bad... but do the cheap stuff first.
OK, about ABS. 1703-1708 abs unit does not know when U press brake pedal and some of units keep modulating pump runnig all the time, some disabe ABS. Brake pedal switch is 3 pole switch. when U press brake pedal one circuit opens, other shorts. To avoid mistake. Do U have brake light on when U press pedal. Okay, if U have both 1703-1708 codes check brake switch connector, perhaps someone separated it and fogot to plug.
Thanks, PABLO-UA think I`ll take a afternoon snoop around. When I see the temp off the ODB II any idea on the range it functions correctly? Thanks again. This site is excellent.
