If you want some good shocks that don't cost a lot I would go with the yellow Monroe gas magnum. I would replace all 4 though. I have had these shocks before and they work well and last for years.
hands down billsteins have the best shocks... PERIOD. me personally since i did my leveling kit i put on rough country nitro series shocks all the way around (6) since that is who i bought my leveling springs through. they are alrite.. i mean it doesnt ride like a a caddilac, but its a truck. i know people that put the billstiens on and run them for the rest of the life of the vehicle,( sometimes another 300k miles!) and say that ride just as good as the first day. if you dont mind spending a couple extra dollars i am confident that you can find one hell of a deal online that will be similar in price to some other shocks, except you will get the best the first time. IMO, billsteins are the ONLY way to go when it comes to shocks. when i lift my truck, that is the only one i have in mind.
I currently have the blue Monroes; they seem like they would be great for a 2wd, but don't quite control the 4wd front end as well as I feel they should. I had a pair of black Monroes (I believe); they were so bad for the application that my original worn out shocks worked better.
I've never owned a Billstein for any application and never heard anything bad about them. Thanks for the very positive input. I'll look at them as well.
Thanks to all for the recommendations. You gotta go to truck guys to get truck answers...
